Smartphone Running Apps

I've done some digging, but figured I would just throw this question out to you all.

In the past I've used Adidas miCoach for all my exercise needs. I'm training for a series of 5k runs this summer, and miCoach does not allow me the functionality I need.

Ideally, I would like to create a route online, import it onto my device, and run that same route using GPS. This would allow me to ensure that I run the same route each time (to compare pace, time etc.)

I don't think endomondo has this functionality either. Any suggestions?

I don't think any of them do "turn by turn navigation," which is what you seem to want. Many, like Runtastic, Nike+, MapMyRun, etc will allow you to make your own route (or sometimes choose routes of others) and put it on your phone. And then from there you can see where you are and where to go, but to me that's a lot of looking at your phone. It's somewhat easy if you're following streets, but if you're cutting through trails, running in the desert, etc, it's not so great.

From what I read some people map a run then make a gpx file, upload to a navigator and so on.

My runs are typically 5k right now and I find that once you run a route 1-2 times you'll remember where to go exactly. And I'm running in the desert usually. Streets are even easier. :D

Runkeeper lets you plot out & save a route online, so you can choose it on the app when you run.
  • Thanks for the replies. My route is rather complex, so not the easiest to remember. I will take a look at runkeeper though. miCoach is a big let down in this area.
