What is your personal definition of 'Fat'?

After reading through a few posts I've come to wonder about this a little bit, that people would say that 'sure you're overweight but you're not fat'. I get this personally all the time, people telling me that while I'm overweight it doesn't mean I'm fat (which is silly because...I am.)

Which has made me curious, because 'fat' is something that seems to be in the eye of the beholder.

So to you, what does FAT look like?

To me it sort of works in stages. There's 'chubby' (say, 35% body fat), which is visually slightly overweight, just noticeable, and then 'fat' comes when you're obviously overweight or over (say 40%<), which isn't to say that I perceive it as a negative thing, because it isn't. To me fat is neither positive nor negative, it simply is.

Its all about "look" not a % or weight.. I've seen 130lb people look fat and I weigh 300 and I don't look fat.. I have seen people around the same bf% with one looking fatter than the other do to height and how they carry mass. I sure fire way to tell if someone is fat. If they have to lift their stomach so you can see they are wearing underwear. They are fat

Based on this chart and nothing else, which I am very tired of seeing in the first place, 35% and up look "fat" to me. But as another poster said, I have seen some 140 pound people look fat (like my dear MIL who is only a size 12, but looks "fat" because she eats like utter **** and doesn't move outside of work) and some 200 pound people that don't look fat.

I must have the wrong idea of a "fat person" :/ I am 5'5", 137 lbs, 30% body fat, Size 6, and I do consider myself fat... So yeah, maybe I need to re-evaluate, excuse me...

Generally 35% and up. Go ahead and call me shallow or whatever but that's my definition.

I am around 20% body fat and do not look like that girl at all. Just depends on your body!

You think? If your pictures are recent, you should really get out of that "fat" mentality, because it's something you are not.

Well I'm 23% BF myself, so I wouldn't consider myself fat. I don't necessarily equate fat with ugly, though. I think the 35% woman is getting a little fat, but I still think she looks attractive and healthy. There's nothing wrong with a little extra if you're healthy. Anything above that may still be attractive or not, depending on how they carry it, but they'd really have to consult with their doctors to determine whether they are healthy fat or unhealthy fat. It's different for everyone. So yes, OP, I'd say definitions of "fatness" are very personal.

For example, 28% body fat isn't fat for most women. However, I have a genetic predisposition for high blood pressure and hypercholesteremia even within the healthy BMI range, so when I was at 28% BF at age 31, even though I ate my veggies and exercised, my numbers were the numbers of a 55 year old overweight man. At 28%, I was fat. I had to get down below 25% to see the numbers drop into the normal range, and I've been fine as long as I keep my body fat % down. It's just the way I was made. So...fat is relative, I guess. :flowerforyou:

Hmmm...Thank you. Interestingly enough, I think I just "got it"--that's exactly what I am in (a "fat mentality") and I need to get on the "health train" *huggle*

 If you think you are fat or aren't happy with the way you look, you could try strength/resistance/weight training. You may end up actually gaining weight, but you'll slim down and tighten up :)

The flip side to this is that not everyone who is fat is unhealthy. I had a full work up done at my highest weight, 240 and 5'10" inches. I was definitely fat, probably 45% or more body fat. My doctor was worried about thyroid issues simply because of the weight gain. But he could find nothing at all that was outside of a healthy range.

Now the weight gain was during a period of inactivity due to bone spurs in my ankle. They didn't show up on the first two X-rays, so went the better part of a year treating it as soft tissue damage and being severely limited in physical mobility. And packed on 60 pounds.

But I felt miserable, and have no doubt if I had remaine at that weight, I would not have remained healthy indefinitely.

If I saw the 30% girl heading my way, I'd jump on my husbands eyes like throwing myself on a grenade, cause i know he'd ogle that for sure.

If I saw the 35% girl I'd worry about him looking at her too, but I'd also worry about accidentally saying the word "fat" in front of her in any context and hurting her feelings because I consider her and all the ones higher than her as "fat". However when clothed I hardly think it would be noticeable and as I said before hubby "would bang" at least with his eyes. Or whatever u know what i mean.

I would freely say the word "fat" in any context in front of the 30% girl and the thinner ones assuming they know they are not fat. So if they perceive themselves as fat, I guess that's how I'd end up being the b!tch, at that party.

I wouldn't think of myself as fat unless I was the last one. If you imagine the 40% woman in clothes, she wouldn't look fat at all.

agree. It would be interesting to also have photos of these same girls or body type wearing fitted clothes. Would they pick the same person in clothing vs bikini?

35% is sexy. 40% and up is fat. It's a fine line.

Wow... I look like the 35% in the picture but I definately consider that as fat.. the 30% picture is the top limit for looking healthy in my opinion (for a woman - men are better beefy :)

I judge myself more than I do others.
I wouldn't think of a chubby person as fat, but when I was that way I called myself a beached whale
