How to start weight training?

This is gonna sound like a stupid question, but how do I start heavy weight training? Before now, I have always focused mostly on cardio and done a small amount on the weight machines but pretty low weights! Everyone says how great heavy lifting is, so I just wanna know, where do I start?
Can anyone recommend a good routine to begin with? Weights, sets and reps etc? Also, do the weight machines count or does it have to be free weights?
Thank you in advance!

Look At stronglifts 5X5 (Google it)
the plan is free to access. and importantly assume nothing about what you can/can't lift
It is entirely free-weights but the writer explains exactly why
I am 7 weeks in and frankly i have made more progress these last few weeks in terms of strength and toning than i did in the previous 6 months0
