Dont laugh at our home gym

Ok so we have a second hand bench, some 5kg dumbells, a barbell and 20kg plates found off a verge collection and a squat rack my husband made from wood. I have never done free weights in my life and have a dodgy back so Im a bit worried at the risk of injuring myself if I start lifting using this motley collection.
Any advice?

First get New Rules of Lifting for Women and read, this was the first thing I did. I got mine online from Bookworld for about $20 (from your username I'm guessing your an Aussie).
Second I goggled and you tubed how to do the lift properly.
Watch your form in a mirror to make sure that it looks good.
I did a ton of body weight squats to make sure that I got the feel of the exercise. eg making sure that i could feel the movement from my hips and less from my knees.
Start lighter ( I started with just the bar) and work you way up to heavier weights.
I know that there are a lot more experienced lifters who may offer a lot better advice, but this is what I did.
