If you read these forums, you will be confused. The NET business was something created by these forums. You won't hear it anywhere else.0

Math applies everywhere, not just these forums. Your net calories are the amount you've eaten minus any you've burned off in exercise. When you tell MFP you want to lose, say, a pound a week, it will give you a number of calories to eat to accomplish this--say, 1500. If you don't exercise and eat the 1500, you'll lose a pound a week.
Now, if you go out and use up 500 of those 1500 calories you ate exercising, it's as if you only ate 1000, which is too little for most people and can lead to all sorts of problems down the line if you keep doing it, including slower metabolism, brittle hair and nails, poor skin, low energy.
That's why it's important to pay attention to your net calories, and make sure you're fueling your body properly while you lose weight.0 -

Absolutely true. Nobody in the whole world uses "net" except these forums.
Honestly I despair sometimes...0 -

These forums are the only place you will find someone with the false belief that you must "NET" a certain amount of calories a day to fuel the body. Otherwise problems will occur? Like the shut down of bodily organs or maybe "slower metabolism, brittle hair and nails, poor skin, and low energy"? This is paranoid, fear mongering, uneducated, and hypochondracts talking.
Don't take my word for it. The only Registered Dietitian on these forums has already answered the "Net" business. Link below to read what he has to say about 600 net calories. You are welcome to ask him what 500 net calories would do to your body, though I am sure it would be the same as 600 net.
