Michigan State football signee walks away from scholarship
Hello everyone, it’s me again. First of all, you all are doing a great job.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/michigan-state-football-signee-jay-harris-walks-away-102723798.html
So I came across the article above. In a nutshell, Jay Harris walked away from a full ride scholarship to Michigan State, to peruse a rap career. Now, I usually try to avoid the comment sections of stories like this because you tend to see a lot of negative remarks. This case was no different. Most of the comments were something like, “the kid is an idiot” and “he will regret his decision.” So of course this article got me curious about some things:
1. The kid is only 18, I would be embarrassed if I told you what profession I thought I would get into around his age.
2. He is going after his dream. Yes the odds are against him but doesn’t he deserve more respect for going after what he want’s?
3. Have you ever been in a situation where you went against popular opinion? More specifically, did you turn down a “sure thing” for something more rewarding?
4. Come on now, not only is this kid Dat Bull, he’s going to be Dat bull for life. So he’s committed….lol
As usual I would enjoy your comments about this story. Remember, Dat Bull for Life will take your wife, so be nice.

I don't know if this kid is a good rapper or not, but the fact that he was offered a scholarship to play at Michigan State suggests he's a pretty good football player. Now, there's no guarantee he would end up playing professionally, but he would at least have the chance to get a good education. So on those merits, I think this is stupid.
Having said that, I don't feel sorry for kids who thumb their noses at a free college education. If this means his scholarship goes to someone who actually wants it, then everyone is better off.0 -
If I understand correctly, Michigan State saw the video and pulled his scholarship due to the profane language. The school didn't want to be represented or to get involved with this type of kid/behavior.1

Different versions of the story so I guess it's who you choose to believe. It's Michigan State, so I believe the kid. :laugh:0 -

I've heard different stories, but if this were true, I'd have much respect for the school.
If Jay Harris turned down the offer to pursue his dream, I respect that as well.0 -
Eh, good for him for following his dream. I walked away from playing minor league baseball to go play college football. just because you're good at something doesn't mean you need to do it.0

Schools not for everyone though, right?0 -

You have a point; there are people who just flat out suck at that type of environment.
At first I'd say, well it was going to be a free scholarship so he has nothing to lose. But I wonder, do scholarships have minimums, say you have to maintain a 3.0 GPA? Because what if he goes and totally clown shoes it up in his freshman year? Would it mean he has to end up paying back the equivalent of 1 year of tuition? Or would they simply just cut the funding, and say if he wants to continue, it's now out of his own pocket?0 -

The issue was more than just profane language....the beginning of the video shows Harris smoking a blunt. While we know its not uncommon for kids that age to smoke marijuana, schools really don't want their scholarship athletes openly promoting it.
Regardless of whether MSU pulled the scholarship before Harris made a decision to pursue rap, the MSU coaches have to be glad this came out before the kid ever enrolled in school.0 -
Oh! As a sidebar AIZZ04, I went to a casino earlier and there was a Family Guy slot machine. One of the bits on it was Ollie Robinson saying "Everybody looks like ants"0
