heart rate question

according to what i've looded up and calculated and my heart rate monitor instructions. My target heart rate should be between 118 - 158, with a max of 174. When I run I jumps up to that pretty fast. I've been slowing to a fast walk when it hits between 165 - 170.
Sometimes I'm ready to walk, having trouble with breathing, other times I feel I could keep going. Should I just ignore the monitor and go with how I feel?

Pretty much, yes.
For now, use the HRM to collect data about your HR response to exercise. Match the numbers you see to different levels of perceived exertion. After you have learned you HR response, you can reprogram the HRM with your heart rate parameters and it will be more useful.0
