How do you respond to a comment on your status?

Sorry, not sure where to post this but if someone comments on your status, what is the proper method of responding so they get your response?

    Options
    You can either reply to them in that same status message, where it will still be visible in their feed, or you just write it on their profile page. The latter is generally more preferable to me, as they will get an email notification. For people who have a lot of friends, other status updates are more likely to make the first option less likely to be noticed.
