Why do older women wear cloths with floral patterns?

I was at an event this weekend and most of the older women had outfits on that had bright color pants and floral or patterned tops. Or colored shirts and patterned pants. I've noticed most younger and middle-aged women don't ear this stuff. Does anyone know why and when women switch into pattern/floral mode?
