strength training/lifting....???

I am running 2-3 miles a day (with 1-2 rest days) but feel like I need something more. I want to burn fat/build muscle. I know about eating healthy as well and I do (mostly). I have some 3/5/8 lb dumbbells and I want to start lifting weights. I am reading conflicting information. Do I want to do more reps with lighter weights or lift heavier weights?? Where can I find info on this?? Thanks in advance!
