Does anyone with 50+ pounds to lose just love yoga?

Hello all! I have been wanting to join a yoga class for a while now but I'm very overweight and completely paranoid about being the "fat girl" in yoga class. I also fear I won't be able to do it and will look like a total idiot. So has anyone out there who has 50+ pounds to lose done yoga with success? And if you have do you have pointers for enjoying yoga? Thanks!

I am currently 245 and have never been flexible, I want to lose another 65 pounds. My trainer has me taking yoga every Friday to help with my stress issues. At first, I hated it! I couldnt do half the positions and I still cant go from downward dog to stepping between my hands.....I have to stand up a little because my legs cant seem to tuck under very well.

That being said, I am definitely noticing a difference when I do post workout stretching, I find I can reach just a bit more each week. Don't worry about being the "fat girl" in class, I am the big girl in my class but no one pays attention, everyone is concentrating on their own workout. I made friends with another client of my trainer and it is sooo nice to have a workout buddy just as dedicated as I am.

    Focus on your own workout.
    Wear comfortable clothes.
    Get a workout buddy.
If you fall out of position, get right back into it. People drop out of position all the time.

I cant tell you how many times I have fallen out of the Moon or Airplane. :)

    GOOD LUCK!

Feel free to add me if you like.

Ive been doing yoga since I was at least 255 and Looooove it! My instructor has also commented several times about how perfect my poses are, so just because your a bigger girl doesn't mean you can't do it!! Give it a try!

Edited for Pointers... None really, you just gotta try it to see if it is something you enjoy, it's not for everyone, but I love the challenge, the feeling of strength using my own body and the stress relief I get out of it :)

I'm not overweight (nor have I done Yoga), but I've seen the heavy girls in my Kung Fu/Tai Chi classes get totally into it—and show me up.

Just focus on yourself. It's not about them. Push yourself to your limits. Believe me, there are plenty of completely inflexible tall skinny people. Touching my toes in an accomplishment for me. I can barely do Yoga stuff. Yet I'm going to take a class in June and I'm probably going to make an idiot out of myself along with every one else who'll be new to it.

Also, right on with the buddy suggestion. Classes are so much better with work out buddies.

I'm about 30 pounds to lose but I started doing a hot yoga class and I love it. It is hard the first couple of classes because your combining the heat and the moves but no body notices if you can't do the moves - every one is focusing on themselves. Hot yoga has a lot of good benefits for health and it says you can burn up to 1100 calories a 90 minute class. Whether or not that's true - I don't know but I can tell you I have felt more energized and getting a better workout at my regular workouts. I would say go for it and focus on the benefits your getting for yourself. Everyone starts somewhere!

Not to worry, I'm a fat girl in Yoga class and i love it!!!! I have a VERY Stressful job and at the end of a long week i find it is the best 85 min i can give me. It helps me unwind and not be stressed out. Stress makes me gain like cray cray. I just focus on me and focus on my movements. Yoga is all about you and your focus.
  • There are several girls in my hot yoga classes that are bigger and they do fine. I think going to classes are much better if you've never done Yoga. Your instructor can help you get the poses right so that you do not injure yourself. You can also get a subscription to YogaGLO which I do on the days I can't attend classes, but I'm obsessed:) Good luck and just let go!
  • Thanks so much everyone! I need to look into signing up for a class.
