HRM vs. app on phone

My HRM (mio DRIVE) is giving me over 1,000 burn and the app I use is only giving me over 300 cal burn on my morning walk today (90 mins.)
I've always noticed my HRM gave me higher numbers.
I walk fast, pushing a stroller and always incorporate some serious hills for a better workout.

What gadget would you trust?

I am thinking the Map My Walk is more accurate since it knows the elevation, speed and distance. I should ditch the HRM??

Assuming your HRM is generally accurate (does it have a chest-strap?) I'd go with that; Does your app on the phone know your weight, age, etc. . .?

I use a polar FT7 and Walkmeter on my iPhone and they're usually pretty close. Walkmeter does ask for my stats. I would think that a HRM would trump an external device because speed and elevation would affect your heart rate and that's more the measure you're looking for.

300 calories seems really low for 90 minutes. 1000 seems a little high; but you're pushing a stroller on hills so it feels not so unlikely.

HRM takes your vitals. Phone does not. That should settle that one.

It SHOULD settle it, but if there's any question.. I'll quote this for good measure.

Trust the HRM.... elevation/speed/distance don't matter. Exertion and what you're putting into the workout does.

Usually the HRM is more accurate, however in looking at reviews for the mio Drive it is not the most accurate. It does not have a chest strap. It is one of those that claims it gives an accurate reading via the wrist but if you read the reviews on amazon not so much.

I use a Polar HRM with a chest strap and I get the exact opposite of the OP. The phone app will give me double calories burned versus the HRM. I trust the Polar HRM with the chest strap.

Sadly my wife cannot use hers because the chest strap chews her up pretty bad on long runs.

Yeah, no chest strap on the HRM and the phone app does know my weight, height, etc ...
I just can't get over the HUGE variance between the two when it comes to the calorie burn. I've had this HRM for about 4 years and the app for a couple of weeks.
My executive decision is to ditch the HRM and got with the app. If nothing else, it will just make me workout more to burn more calories.

....the app, as everyone else has told you, is not going to give you an accurate number. Weight/Height/Age is based on rough estimations and calculations. Even WITHOUT the chest strap, your HRM is going to give you a slightly more accurate number. Hills don't matter, neither do speed or distance.. because at that point, the app is going to skew your numbers again... even more.

You're really doing yourself a disservice by getting rid of the tool that is going to be more useful. Why use a wrench to drive a nail when you already have a hammer?

    Yes, good point.
I've just been getting flack for reporting the high calorie burn numbers by ppl claiming it isn't possible to burn 1000+ cals on a walk. I was assuming the HRM wasn't that accurate.
