Sugar

I am surprised at how little natural sugar is allowed natural fruit wise. I realize the system may not be able to tell the difference but I would suggest that it be able to recognize a minimum amount of fruits and veggies. Am I missing something? Am I eating too much bread which counts towards it? I'm confused. I come to myfitnesspal not knowing much about nutrition.

I stopped tracking sugar for this reason. It was driving me nuts that some fruit would put me over.

I wouldn't worry about the daily amounts of sugar too much, if it is natural sugar.
I go over everyday in the sugar category just by eating two fruits.
Even milk has lots of sugar in it! But it is healthy to have 2 glasses a day.
I also go over in cholesteral instantly by eating eggs in the morning...
That's why I do not worry about the amounts too much if I know i'm eating healthy.

Easy. By removing sugar from the list of nutrients/macros that my diary tracks for me. Hasn't stopped me from losing.

The sugar settings on mfp do not differentiate between natural sugars in fruit and vegetables for example, and added sugars. 2 pieces of fruit can make me go over my sugar allowance. I wouldn't pay any attention to it if I were you. Be aware of trying to take in less sugar from processed food etc, but don't worry about the number from natural sources.

The recommendation for sugar is based on the American Heart Associations recommendation for ADDED sugar. There is no formal recommendation for total sugar that I am aware of. Eat your fruit, it's good for you...and hardly the cause of the obesity epidemic.
  • I'm fairly new to MFP and thought I'd check the forums about the sugar counter. I eat almost no added sugar and the fact that I was going over on sugar every day got me questioning the methodology behind this. Glad to see I'm not the only person with the same concerns!

    Thanks for the info, folks!

As a sugar junkie, it's one of the first things that I do track! However, over the last 2 weeks, I have rarey drank a fizzy drink which is pretty darn good for me considering I usually go through about 3 bottles a day! I always find it useful to track because I feel it's the reason why I've been gaining weight and not losing it.
