Anyone know what can cause your ankles to make popping and cracking sounds during movement, it doesn't hurt but I don't know why I'm only getting it largely on one foot and its annoying as well! :explode:

If you are talking about when you stretch at rotate the ankle to pop it, then I've had that forever, and it's completely normal. If you're just walking, and it's making sounds the whole time... then get it looked at.0

My feet do that. Must be an aging thing. I can't sneak barefoot. You'll hear me coming.0

I always thought it was from air bubbles (or whatever) in the joints. I don't worry about it unless there is pain and/or a grinding sensation.0

Depending on the frequency I would say it has to do with your joints. Your joints (a good example is knuckles as we all crack them here and there) can make a cracking noise every hour or so, but if this cracking is so frequent and happens during regular activities that are not heavy on joint movement then there could be an issue and it would be a good idea to meet with your GP or a Rheumatologist to see if there is anything that might be happening with your joints or otherwise.0

I have always had it with my ankles, though my Achilles has been starting to do it.....i'm waiting for the day that it snaps..OUCH!0

Other than recommending a health professional to check it out... Calcium deficiency? Go gnaw on some calcium goodness for a while (a week perhaps) and see if it lessens. I'd take it easy on your foot during this time. Weird that is occurring on one foot... ): Hope you sort it out!0

Genetics can also play a role. My ankles, knees and shoulders do this. So do my dad's...so do my son's. Annoying? Yes. But like another poster said, unless it's painful, it's probably not something to really worry about.0

Alright cheers people! Yeah, I'm thinking back about it and I think it may have been an injury I sustained when I was really young, probably pulled a tendon or something :sick:0

the general rule of thumb is don't worry about sounds. Worry if there is pain or range of motion loss.0

Same thing happened to me, I nearly broke my ankle when I was about 16 and to this day it gets sore faster and sometimes does the crackling and popping when I stretch or exercise.
YMMV, of course, but there are braces and straps available from companies like Ace, Adidas, or Mueller that really help me out. If you feel bones grinding or any sort of sharp pain, definitely see your doctor about it, but maybe a little extra support is all you need.0 -
I have been skateboarding for over 25yrs, when i walk it sounds like im walking a gravel. Late at night the sound of my ankles will actually wake me up. They are not painful, but often at night when my ankles pop, I cant feel it go cold, that sometimes ache. Sounds like old injuries, and age.0
