Need motivation...58 year old lung cancer survivor

Boy do I need motivation. Everytime I try to exercise I get so out of breath that I just want to quit and go get a big bowl of ice cream to make me feel better. Being 65 pounds overweight on my tiny 5'2" frame has caused me to tear my meniscus in both knees so that is also very painful. It's a vicious circle.

Beating cancer is a huge accomplishment. You are a survivor, you can do anything!
I am 61 years old.I did zero exercise until I had lost 100+ pounds. My knees hurt just walking up the stairs. I began walking in October of 2012 at first just for about 20 minutes. I did a 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. My knees have improved more than I can say. I now exercise every day for 1-1/2 hours. Walking, elliptical machine and light weights mostly, but sit ups, planks, jumping jacks too. I got a fitbit in early February. I absouletly love it. It is the best motivator for me that I could ever imagine. In fact, today was my first 25,000+ step day.
Check with your doc's and ask what exercise would be appropriate for you as a lung cancer survivor. Do you have diminished lung capacity that may hinder exercise?

  • Thanks so much for the support. I have recently joined 24 hour fitness as it has a pool. I take the classes on tuesday and thursday. It's a start and it is making me stronger every day. I have even started walking around the block with my son for about 20 minuites every evening. (Bonding time) Your support has really made me want to try harder.
