sugar free frosting nightmare

Last week I decided to try the new sugar free frosting in a can. I stupidly did not read the entire label. Needless to say, the maltitol and sorbitol had horrific effects on my body. I have never experienced so much pain. The biggest concern I have now is that I have gained weight since then and still have stomach pain. Has anyone heard if it's possible to damage something in your digestive tract permanently from something with such a laxative effect?

I've never been a sugar-free kind of person, but I have taken many different medications over the years (dialysis and kidney transplant) with crazy effects on my digestive tract. I've had endocopies, xrays, barium swallows, and every sort of test available. No hard diagnosis. The last time I was fed up enough with my body to mention it to my doctor, she basically said, "I know the pain must suck, but this is just how your body works."
While I think a week out would still be healing, it is possible to permanently damage your digestive tract with chemicals.0
