How to Log water excersise?

Ok so I've been taking a swimming coarse that has us in the pool 4 hours a day some days...we are not always moving the whole time but when I wore my HRM the first 2 days it probably read a little less than 50% of the time. yesterday I had a reading of 1068 cals burned in the 3 1/2 hours i was in the water but again is was only picking up the transmitter less than half the time I was in the water. My question is do I double the calories? do I count all 3 1/2 hours I was in the water? how do I track this? and does anyone have any tips on how to get my HRM (Polar FT7) to work better in the water? I tried first wearing it below my breast and then above and neither one was better than the other....any ideas anyone?
