I exceeded my calorie goals on my second day...but not givin

This is my second day on this site. I am amazed at all that is offered here for free. Several years ago, I belonged to a similar site, but was charged a significant monthly fee. Sometimes, the best things in life are free.
Well, I was shocked, thinking I had made wise choices at a restaurant tonight. I was on track all day. I excitedly returned to our hotel room (we're on a mini vacation) to log in and record my "wise choices". Unfortunately, I wound up going over my intended calorie goal for the day. Normally, that would be discouraging. But today, I am thinking that this information will just better guide me for tomorrow. I will not give up! Besides, who knows what choices I would have made if I wasn't trying to be careful.
I was wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation? Does this happen often or do you just become much better at planning and making sure you stay under your daily calorie goals?

Definitely don't give up! It takes time to overhaul your eating habits and the most important thing is that you logged it all in and learned from it. You can do it! Plus, it's always harder on a vacation - no matter how mini
I just wanted to add that it took me several days to get it down for me to be consistently (but not always, I'm no superhero!) under my calorie goal. I had to play around with what I ate, what I shopped and cut out fast food all-together. The crucial thing for me is that I eat multiple small meals all day - basically I graze. The calorie goal is pretty low for me (trying to lose 2lb a week, so about 1,200), so the only way I don't go crazy is to not go more than 2-3 hours without a snack or meal! LOL, my co-workers must think I eat non-stop because I feel like I'm always eating, but I stay satisfied and it helps keep me from getting crabby when my blood sugar drops too low!0 -
When it comes to restaurants, I try to look up information online BEFORE I go, so I know what I can order without breaking the "caloric bank" Some restaurants have nutrition info posted on their websites. If not there, some info is in the MFP database, or there are other websites like dailyplate. When all else fails, google "restaurant name nutrition information" and you will usually get something.
Don't be afraid to ask for something to be prepared differently. IE-- I always ask them to hold the croutons or any deepfried crunchies on a salad, and serve the dressing on the side. Avoid breaded or fried entrees. If you see a fish or chicken dish you like but it has a sauce, ask them to eliminate the sauce, or serve it on the side. Ask that no salt be added to your food during prep. Most places are happy to honor such requests, as they should be since YOU are paying for it!!

That is a great idea to check out the calories before going. I actually didn't know that restaurant chains were listed. We went to Outback, so I took a chance and couldn't believe it when the entire menu was available.

I plan all my foods for the day before I leave the house in the AM, and most times, log it into MFP to see what I have, that lets me know what I have left for dinner, and if I want more than what I have left, I just burn more calories at the gym that night. and I take all my snacks and lunch with me for the day. I leave my house at 9 am, have my first snack at 11:30, lunch around 1:30 or 2:00, pre workout snack at 4:30, then at the gym by 5:30. Dinner after gym. This may not work for everyone, but it does for me! Good luck!0

Hey Nicole, we both signed up for this on the Sunday after Christmas? It's my third day, and I went over on day 2 also, even though I thought I was being very careful. I knew that I slipped when I ate the garlic bread at dinner, but I was surprised that I went over by as much as I did. My choices for food for the day were pretty good, though. I wonder if it makes a difference if you consume the calories in the form of oranges and edamame compared with brownies and hershey kisses? I've been at this for so long, and I, too, have joined online food diary before (for a fee), and I've been a gym rat, and I've had great successes and depressing failures. I hate dieting, but friends who are successful tell me that if I have to write down what I eat, I'll be more vigilant about it. I hope so, and I wish you the best of luck, also.0
