How can I figure the calories burned? Drumline

Hi everyone!

I have no clue how to log this activity.

I play in an NFL drumline and on game days I walk around for several hours with a 30 pound drum on. It's a major workout. BUt I can't find any info on how many calories I burned. It's basically dancing while carrying 30 pound on your front (that's a lot for me, I'm barely 5'2"), plus you're also playing the drum in a VERY energetic manner.

I did find "marching band" on here, but it's basically just counting that as walking. Trust me, this ain't walking. THen I saw "marching-military style" which seems a little closer, but would only account for the moving around, not the weight and not the playing. So confused!

I'm in a marching band too. :] If you enter "marching" to cardio it should bring up a fairly accurate result.

    Rock on!
  • I would probably suggest a heat rate monitor if you eant more accurate numbers

Good idea with the heart monitor. I did check my pulse every 30 minutes or so and it stayed pretty steady around 120-130. According to an online equation, that would be over 1,000 calories an hour!!! Which seems extreme, but also seems close to accurate. I mean, it wears me out big time, like all the energy I can muster, and I also eat snacks during it and I can never get full. THen I'm ravenous at the end of the game.

I'm asking for a heart rate moniter for Christmas. I have always wondered how many calories I burn in 45 minutes of conducting an ensemble! OR moving basically the entire bandroom to the auditorium for a concert.

Ssminey79- Us band people are always doing physical stuff, huh? I'm not a conductor, but I could imagine, that'd be great for your arms!!! What level do you teach?

I think I may have to invest in a heart monitor :)

And looks like that major workout paid off. Now I'll have to keep up the physical activity this week.
  • I was a drum major and I always burned serious calories especially during parades. I am doing drum corp soon so I am excited to take my hrm with me!

There's one on there, I think it's carrying a 15lb load. You could try to look at the calories burned for doing that for 3 hours (I think that's what you said?) and then also look at the calories for marching for the same amount of time and kind of add them together. Maybe all of the marching calories plus 1/2 of the carrying a load calories? Something like that? I get this problem too. I push a double stroller with 50lbs worth of kids in it, uphill, fast paced, for 40 minutes at a time. There is no exercise for that in the database here, so I will sometimes add a few together to give me what I think is accurate.
  • I'm marching drum corps as well. I play contra for the San Francisco Renegades. I'm not sure that the calorie counts are right either. Running those yard lines is tough but it sure is an amazing feeling at the end of a rehearsal. I just want to know what I'm really burning while we're marching.
