Tape vs Scales

I've been weighing myself most days for the past 30 days (since I joined) and measuring myself around every 2 weeks.

My goals are to lose weight, lose size, and mainly get fitter/healthier.

I've lost 5kg and I'm happy with that, and I think that I look noticeably fitter too - smaller hips, smaller waist, more toned abs and arms.

HOWEVER. When it comes to the measuring tape, there's little to no difference from when I started? I think I must be doing it inaccurately as sometimes I might pull it harder than other times, or I might be tensing more than other times subconsciously. And it's hard to try and measure the same place every time.

I've been eating around 1200 Cal (net), with a couple of days over, and exercising minimum 30 mins but usually around 60 per day (strength training and treadmill c25k) for every day except 4 over the past month! And I feel like I can see the change!

It depresses my motivation when it looks like I haven't lost size based on the measuring tape, even though I feel like I can see a difference and my boyfriend and friend commented on it like a week or so ago!

So I'm after opinions on tape vs scales - I know everyone is different, but just curious to what other people think?

I use both. But --- I only measure once every 30 days.
  • I use both....but what I notice that when I cut out the amount of carbs I was eating a day def made a difference in my inches!

You might try having someone else help you with the measuring, if you can. I have a hard time getting the tape around me and then getting an accurate mark.

It's usually recommended you measure AND weigh since often times one will show more progress than the other and can be more reliable.

When I did more strength training than cardio, I lost inches but very few pounds, if any (mostly bounced the same 3 lbs around). When I added a few days of cardio each week (only about 20 mins or so), I noticed the scale starting to move. I also agree with a previous poster that cutting refined carbs/sugars helps me tremendously with losing inches in the waist.

On the other hand, when I do lots of squats, my hip measurement increases a little but I'm more toned. I use my clothes as the ultimate guide though. When the scale wasn't moving, I still dropped 2 pant sizes.

You need a good measuring tape. I use "Myotape" because it makes it very easy to self-measure. Got it on the internet.
