Cook them according to directions. Once cooked, you can freeze them into portion sizes (1 cup portions, maybe?). After they are cooked, you can mash them up with salt, pepper, cooked onions, sauteed chile pepper for refried beans. Use them like you would any cooked beans in salads, tacos, etc. Season them with herbs as a high fiber side dish. Use them with a load of veg in a quesadilla.0

lol.. yea cooking and preparing is a pain... i finally just order edens organic no salt from amazon.com....
but i make (taco meat) with them...
add if you want meat one lb lean ground turkey, onions, garlic, cumin and one packet of low sodium taco seasoning lowest you can find.
cook all that and puree the pintos and then mix those in well... looks just like taco hell... my kids will eat it breakfast lunch and dinner if i'd let them. use it for dips or mix with other crap for 7 layer dip etc.0 -
Put them in an empty vitamin pill bottle and make maracas for your amateur band.0

If you rinse them well in cold water, you don't have to soak the beans at all. But you will need to increase the cooking time slightly. Dried beans do well in a crock pot.
Once cooked they are wonderful with cornbread and chopped onion. Or you can mix them with brown rice or other whole grain for an entree. Or make bean burritos, tacos, enchiladas, etc. Add spices and puree for a tasty bean dip.
In the last hour of cooking add other chopped vegetables for a tasty soup.0 -
Oh some good ideas there.
Can I cook the whole packet then and freeze them, what would the process be to defrosting them? ie how long for, how long would they keep for, once cooked and frozen0 -

That made me laugh0 -

The refried beans sound gorgeous. Thanks0 -
Once you've cooked them you can do all sorts with them - put them in salads, put them in enchiladas, put them in chili con carne. They're a source of protein like meat.0

I make chili, refried beans, bean salad, even bean tacos....0

Soak them overnight in beer, then rinse and boil in water for an hour the next day. I don't know how healthy it is but it sure is tasty0

Your taco one sounds yummy, thanks0 -
My husband does this not me, but he says if you soak them overnight in some water then the next day you can make some pretty good homeade chili or ham and beans with them. Anyway I think soaking them is the easy, no worries trick.0

How long would you need to cook them if theyre not soaked, I seen you can't put them straight in the crock pot. What process did you use, i've a bag of 500g here just0 -

Make Beans and Rice. Cook as the instructions say. (I always soak and rinse, then use fresh water to cook. This reduces some of the gas!) Add some sort of spicy or smoked lowfat sausage links, cut up in slices. (Like Hillshire farms, or there are some good turkey ones out there. Also some of the Warehouse clubs have different varieties. Just check the fat and calories, but remember that you will likely not eat a whole serving in one bowl of beans!) I also add a can of tomatoes after the beans have cooked, and some cajun spices. Sometimes I use the tomatoes and chiles (like Rotel tomatoes) if I want it extra spicy. Serve over rice (preferable brown rice). The family loves it, and it will cook in the crock pot for make-ahead meals!0

That sounds nice, but the pic looks a bit minging lol.
It doesn't say about soaking or cooking the beans for 8hs, I wonder do they have to be cooked first?0 -

Add maybe 45 - 60 min to the cooking time. I usually just go by texture more than the clock. If doing them in the crockpot and I haven't soaked them overnight, I rinse them well put in the crockpot with seasonings, cover with amount of water in directions on high for about an hour, then drop the temp to medium and let them go all day. If it's a work day and I'm short on time, I'll put them in the crockpot on medium but cover with boiling water to get them started. Beans take a long time to cook but they need very little care while they are cooking.0 -
I cook beans about once a month, a huge crockpot full. I soak them in a big bowl of water overnight, making sure there is about twice the amount of water as there are beans because they will absorb quite a lot of it by the morning. I then drain that water, rinse the beans and toss them into my crockpot. I add boiling water to them in the crockpot, just enough so it covers them by one half to one inch, and cook them on low if I'm starting them in the morning for dinner that night. I cook them on high if I am starting in the afternoon. DO NOT ADD SALT while they cook, or they will stay a bit harder than you like!
When done, I can turn them into some of the great ideas already given. I can make bean soup with some of them, which I love to do when I have had a ham with a bone in it. Save the juices from the cooked ham, add the bone with the cooked beans in the pot, with chopped or diced onions (your preference), allow it to simmer an hour, remove the bone, and you have instant deliciousness. I love beans and rice. I will sometimes just have a cup of cooked pinto beans with half an once of cheese and a diced tomato on top, with salt and pepper, for my lunch. It gives me lots of fiber for keeping me full longer, and is very tasty. Who knows...you might find that you like pinto beans and start buying them already dried, which is much cheaper than the canned kind.0 -
Yumm. I must go through 50 # of dried pintos a years. We love beans and put them in everything.0

Try Googling "pinto bean burgers." They're tasty!0

I have a super yummy pinto bean recipe that I make in the crockpot!
Rinse the beans, soak in water overnight in the crock. Next morning - add a can of diced tomatoes, diced onion & bacon, salt, pepper & garlic & 1/4cup sugar. Turn on low & let cook all day! They are super delicious!0 -
There really is some brill ideas here. I think i'm gonna cook them off plain and work my way through them x
Thanks everyone0 -
Bring them to a boil, simmer for one minute, cover and then let soak overnight. Rinse. Add the beans, two onions quartered, a couple of ham hocks, and reduced sodium chicken broth. Beans should be completely covered in liquid. You can also add a lot chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, white pepper and bit of cumin if you're using them in Mexican dishes.
Cook on low for at least 8 hours in the crock pot. I cook mine until they thicken up, but that's a personal preference.
Oh, and never add salt when you cook beans. It splits the skins and makes them tough. If you want salt, add it when they are done.
Enjoy!0 -

yup, this is my method. When cooking other beans, I add hamhocks, greens and onion for added flavor. you can use beef bones as well. (these are just thick cuts of bone mostly used to make beef stock)
masged for burritos, rice, beans and pork is good but mainly for mexican dishes.0 -
heres the easiest way to cook dried beans. i use small red beans from kroger cause i like them the best but you can do this with any dried beans.... get ready... its so easy.....
empty beans into crock pot. cover with water about 2 inches over beans. add 1 rough chopped onion. 5 or 6 cloves of smashed garlic a bit of salt (i use kosher) and if you like cumin add 1 tablespoon. you can put them on before you go to bed on high. i like to put them on sunday morning on low and let them cook til monday morning. i eat them all week long at work-- hope you'll try this! they are soooo good for you and so inexpensive!0 -
I rinse them and throw them in the crock pot covered with about three inches of water. Turn the crockpot on high for about 6 hours. Do not salt until they are soft!!! They seem to not cook as well if you salt them right away. I season them with cumin, onions, garlic and Chili powder and put them in a taco shell or make a taco salad or put them over rice. Super yummy and inexpensive.0

I soak them overnight, then put them in a crockpot with some smoked turkey.... yummy0
