working out with a hernia is probably not the safest thing to do. you should get it checked out as it could get worse with exercise.

I have an abdominal hernia that was caused by a car accident 24 years ago. Now that I've lost weight I can see the bulge in my abdomen but it doesn't affect my working out at all. Back when I was in the hospital the doctors said that I may want to have it surgically repaired at some point though I haven't seen the need.

have a couple of hernias at the current time. One of them was bad enough to warrant surgery. Granted the surgery through the military was outdated, but it was bad enough to need it. Go get checked out. I had the others ones checked too, and they are just annoyance.
  • Is it strangulated? I had a hernia for two years and just recently got it surgically repaired. The doctor told me that I could continue to workout in that condition but there was a high chance of it becoming strangulated. It only grew over those two years due to my high level of activity and it only *really* hurt after a long run or squats. After the surgery I was probably out for a month or so then I was back on the run.
If you want more info just PM me.

The danger with hernia is that tissue that is bulging can become strangulated. I had an abdominal hernia that was undiagnosed after my last pregnancy. I finally decided to make an appt to have the bulge checked out and a few days before I was supposed to go I got out of bed and felt horrible, sharp pain in my stomach. I couldn't even stand up and was crying. My husband took me to the ER and found out it was a hernia. The dr thinks that intestine may have come out through the hole and that is what the severe pain was. Thankfully, before I left the house my daughter prayed for me and on the way the intestine must have slipped back through the hole. If it had not, I would have had to have immediate emergency surgery. Tissue that gets strangulated can die within hours and you could become gravely ill due to infection. I say all that to say, if you are feeling pain while doing abdominal work you should stop. You are also at risk of making the hernia larger. Just be aware of your body and stop IMMEDIATELY if you feel any discomfort in that area. Also if the pain becomes severe get to the ER right away.
  • I will when i loose more weight. I hear horror storys about how the screens rip and stuff and know a couple people who have gone through several surgerys all because the screens kept ripping. Regardless i want to be in the best shape when and if i have surgery. I am only doing water excerises right now.
