The hype has died down, but H1N1 is still scary.

My brother in law recently found out that he has pretty serious kidney damage from the H1N1 virus. He's undergoing a lot of testing, and we're not sure what the prognosis is yet. I really wish everyone would take it seriously and get vaccinated.

I believe there was a few weeks in between his having the virus, and his kidney damage being diagnosed, but I don't think it took long for him to have symptoms.
  • wow thats scary makes me worried for my friend baby

I'm sure the baby is fine. My brother in law started getting very bloated with fluid, and couldn't keep anything down.
  • i really hope your brother in law will be ok

It is scary. My husband had a friend who died from complications of it when it first broke out in the US.

Has the vaccine supply gotten to the point where everyone CAN get vaccinated? I hadn't even considered it because ealier in the season there wasn't enough vaccine to go around to the people who really need it. I'm in better health than a lot of people and I could probably fight it off better than they can so I decided I'd just hold out..

Also, please be aware that the vaccine is NOT 100%. I have a friend who's daughter caught H1N1 in Oct. After she was better, the doctor had her get her daughter vaccinated in Nov. The daughter caught H1N1 again right before Christmas. The doctor told my friend that they don't know enough about the virus to be able to explain why her daughter still caught it after having it once AND getting vaccinated.

Wow that is scary. That's one of those underlying illnesses that makes the H1N1 such a formidable virus. I had it back in Oct. and it was awful!!! I thought my head was literally going to blow up or something and the fatigue was the worst, couldn't get out of bed for 3 days. Then I got a secondary infection-bacterial sinusitis and bronchitis. So after a round of steroids and antibiotics I finally started feeling like myself 3 weeks after having it! However, I don't know if I agree with your statement that everyone should get vaccinated. My 13 mo had raging fever and aches for 3 days after the vaccination, so I think I'll wait til they develop it a little more (like next year) before I let my son get or my daughter to get another dose.

And yes, the vaccine is widely available now, free in some counties even. And highly recommended as the pres declared the virus an epidemic.
