Weight gain during / Weight loss after pregnancy?

Hi all,

I was talking with my sister recently and she is trying to lose some weight gained during pregnancy. It occurred to us that because she’d always been thin (or on the thinner side) before getting pregnant, she had never really needed to consciously try and lose weight.

I was wondering what some people’s experiences were with losing weight after pregnancy—was it difficult for you? If you never had to try losing weight before getting pregnant, was this more difficult? If you did try losing weight before getting pregnant, did this make losing it after any easier?

I want to give her some tips/advice, but also just some stories from people who have lost weight (or are currently trying) after pregnancy—or perhaps who are now pregnant and thinking about this stuff for the future.

Thanks.

  • I never had to worry much about my weight before getting pregnant. And my mom warned me that women in our family put on a lot of pregnancy weight. And she was right. It took forever to lose it, (6 months) and I had to do a lot of reading. I had to start counting calories and exercising more regularly. It was a real wake-up call. But, eventually it came off and has stayed off. If I get pregnant again, at least I'll have an idea of what to do if the weight comes back.
  • Anyone else have comments/thoughts to share?
  • I was 120 prepregnancy. It fit me well, size 3 jeans. I never had to worry about losing weight. I gained 75lbs during pregancy, getting up to 195lbs. I thought that it would just magically fall off b/c I was small before and could eat anything without gaining. I would be so disappointed after getting on the scale, and a year after I had my son I realized that it was not going to fall off, I had to eat healthy and exercise if I ever wanted to look like the same person. Its been 1 year and 4 months of slowly eating healthy and exercising and I am still losing, trying to get to where I was. I am in the 120's but am working on tightening my stomach, and although I am about the same weight as before I can only fit into 7's, and sometimes 5's

Its about living a healthy lifestyle, and it takes a while to get to that point.

I was thin when I got pregnant the first time and never thought about weight. I lost it all (plus 25 pounds) from nursing. Second pregnancy too.

I'm 53 and this is the first time I've ever tried to lose weight. It is a different mindset. What I have learned (and keep learning) is from logging all my food. I was just ignorant of what was high and low calorie.

I actually wrote something about it for Psychology Today. Although someone in the comments section told me I was dumb because I should have known it already. Hadn't I dieted before? But the answer is: no. This is my first time.

  • Thanks for the input! I'll definitely check out the link to the article and forward it to my sister.

Just hearing what worked for people is really helpful.
