What many of you are describing here are NORMAL transit times for digestion. It is quite possible to have WAY faster than normal transit due to motility-related diarrhea. In this case, it is true that nutrients may not be absorbed properly. I won't speculate how that translates into caloric intake. It probably depends on the cause/type of diarrhea.

    Here is an example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14572571

Have you looked at my poo? I am NOT talking bits. I have a senstive stomach...certain things come out looking like how they went in...no I am not talked about corn poop either. I have had salad for dinner and it come out the other end in the AM. many other things do this too me as well...please don't judge my poop unles you come take a look in my toilet!

I'm always amazed at how poorly I chew. I can understand things rushing through, but I thought I at least chewed my food. The evidence says that I do not, though. (Also, I can eat lunch and see the food again before I leave work, it doesn't even have to take all night.)

I disagree. I have eaten blueberries and within 30 minutes I **** and see a blueberry in the toilet.
    Real talk.

Edited to say: And it's not a blueberry I ate the day before. This is me eating blueberries for the first time in a month or so. Are you saying it's one of those from a month ago? :noway:
Yes. It was a blueberry from a month ago. Blueberries are a superfood and your body stores superfoods in their whole form until it gets a replacement. In some cases, if you chew superfoods up or eat small pieces of them they will be reconstituted into their whole raw form in your gullet (the gullet is the organ responsible for superfood storage) - be very careful eating pomegranates. Your fresh blueberry was stored and the blueberry from a month ago was shat. Next time you eat a blueberry the last one you ate will be released from your gullet and shat but your body will hold onto it until then.

no matter what you eat it takes hours to go through your system, you're just passing stool that is foods youve eaten previously, hope this helps!

Definitely log what you ate, then make a note on your food diary that you had diarrhea. You will be able to track what the irritant in your diet is this way. Some common culprits are wheat, gluten and dairy products.

Once you see a trend, then you can just work to avoid the food that is causing the irritation.

I find it ironic that there is a discussion about "logging" what caused diarrhea.

I find it ironic that I'm getting so much crappy advice on the topic.

Between the stomach absorbing all food calories and our body apparently having 100% efficiency in digestion, I'm just swimming in it at this point.

how many of the calories do you add to your diary?

All of them. Doesn't matter how they came out.....or when.

but why add calories if my body didn't asborb them? It's like fiber, it has calories, but since your body doesn't absorb it they put 0 cals on the label.

Because unless you have had bypass or some other condition that bypass the 20+ feet of your intestines, that DI isn't the Waffle House. It's your body telling to NOT whatever you ate BEFORE the Waffle House crud.

So yes COUNT them. Count EVERYTHING and be honest with yourself - if you want to loose weight, stop trying a way to "cheat" the system - your body will break it down no matter if you add them or not. Your body will USE them no matter if you count them or not.

And I say this from 2 decades of being SICK every day because my stomach didn't like what I ate the day before. AND... my hubby tried to say the same thing to his doctor and the above was what his doctor told him.

Even food poisoning takes a while before it hits you.

Then you have the shortest intestines known to Human Kind.

I am lactose and gluten intolerate - please don't tell me about DI, gall bladder attacks and intestinal pain so bad you WANT to throw up but can't. I know I have gotten crazy sick anywhere from 30min after eating and 24hrs after. Unless you don't have the normal length of intestines, 10 min isn't enough time to break down food.

Now, if you think about cats and use them to understand.... mine eat, then in 10-20 min later hit the pan. Eating food triggers their need to vacate their bowls so what they just ate can start being digested. So if you consider how much shorter their intestines are compared to Humans, they aren't voiding what they just ate. They are passing the last meal they ate.

Maybe your body is acting the same way?

You may be a personal trainer, but apparently you don't train colons. If I eat Chinese Buffet and 15minutes later I see peking duck in the toilet, it obviously passed through.

This gives you a rundown on the digestion process.

And depending on the fiber your body does absorb some calories...as fat.

    ^^ This exactly. Food poisoning:
E Coli: Symptoms appear 3-4 days after eating the contaminated food.
Salmonella: Symptoms appear 6-72 hours after eating the contaminated food.
Listeria: Symptoms appear 2-30 days after eating the contaminated food.
Campylobacter: Symptoms appear 3-5 days after eating the contaminated food.
Calcivirus: Symptoms appear within 2 days of eating the contaminated food.

    16?

Raw carrots do it for me. I could pick the pieces out and reassemble them. ETA: Usually takes less than an hour.

Of course it's not. Because we aren't really that different and you have previous food still in you that would need to be passed first.

    You're asking the wrong question.

You should be asking: how do I best fuel my body to get better.
  • Let’s just cut through the minutia. You don’t know what your body absorbed, but you know what you ate. Adding any mathematical formula once you have consumed it is just an attempt to justify eating more. Even if the food passes right through I am pretty sure you aren’t going to starve to death. Record what you eat. See how your body reacts over time. Much time. Adjust your intake when the results are clear. Don’t complicate the math.
