They're genetic just like calves are.

I have them, and they are definitely hereditary. I have them @ 295lbs and my 5 year old has them too.

Wow! I have back dimples and always thought it was because I had a little extra weight on me. I never knew they were a trait others wanted.

... Now if only the dimples on the backs of my legs were sexy...

LOL! I'm praying that comes true!

mine just showed up after i lost about 18 pounds. i've never seen them on me before in my life, and i have no idea what i did to get them besides losing the weight. i would like to make them more prominent if i can.

Wtf...whats a back dimple and what qualifies as a cute one

Im new at this new hotness game...thighgap check...dimples...donno...other absence of skin in places...maybe?

Omg if I have them are they to big or small or wide or groovy?! I had no idea I was suppose to worry about this :p

Is it the tripple spine line thing I have going on in my back?

If so yeah, you cant make those. Same with the thigh gap in my case. Over 30lbs ago I still had both. The only thing that went away was the beer gut...how cute was I with my gaps and dimples and stomach pooks

Ive never analyzed my body parts so closely before joining MFP...
So far ive learned my back dimples are cute but my thigh gap is considered gross/weird. LOL

edited to add. I think the cause of back dimples would be similar to the cause of face dimples, a shortness in the surrounding muscle..technically it's akin to a birth defect.

I at least hope everyone has calves though, genetic or not...

I've got back dimples. My husband teases me about them, I think he likes them. My boys have them. Funny I really never thought other people had them and just thought they were a birth defect or something weird. I 'm glad other people have them and they are considered sexy :)

Yeah, but sometimes genetics trumps hard work. Not all women have thigh gaps, back dimples or whatever else, just like not all guys have high-peaked biceps or a chin dimple, etc. Sometimes you've just gotta make the best of what you've got and not worry about what you don't/can't have.

you can definitely achieve them! It's very hard to find any athlete without them, both men and women! Try lower back strengthening exercises :D

I have them and it never went away if I gained weight. I think you either have them or you don't.
