Awkward stage...

Options
Hello,

I have struggled with my weight for a while, it has not affected how I look at myself, but I would love to get in shape. I am having a very hard time getting the actual weight to come off, but I"m getting thinner in my waist, legs, face, arm. It is frustrating but rewarding, because even though the scale is not changing, I am! I try not to go by the scale, but by how my clothes fit. I'm fitting into things I bought 4 years ago and the clothes I have they are fitting better. I just get worried/ upset when the scale doesn't show weight loss because of my doctor. If I go in for a well visit or a sick visit she always has something to say!! I know it's her job, but when you're killing yourself with exercise you don't want to hear "You have to get this under control". I feel I'm healthier than her because she sounds out of breath a lot to me.. So I can't seem to get the number moving and when I do, it goes right back up. I think of it as muscle because I would not be getting smaller while gaining weight !!

Thanks for listening/reading!(:<3

    Hi,
Well for starters Congratulations on loosing that inch!!!!!
My hips are my problem, I don't get it either, I work hard, eat mostly okay (no ice cream than chips and soda) I"m a REAL food kind of girl, I eat tons of fruit and veggies. I think of it if you love how you're looking, keep doing it!!

I hope we both get the scale moving!!

    Good luck!(:<3

Same here, but I'm REALLY trying hard not to fixate on the scale. I started exercising in the past couple months and can actaully see/feel the difference in my body. I huffed and puffed through a 20-minute workout and now I can work out with intensity for 1-1/2 hours and usually want to do more! So, the change in my body's health is SO much more important than the scale.

You should speak up to your doctor when she says things about your weight. Tell her that your body is healthier because of your efforts! BE PROUD OF IT GIRLFRIEND! :flowerforyou:

Yes when I started I could not do a short run on the Wii, now I'm doing the Wii Active 2 which is a killer! I do it for 1-2 hours and I feel great! I have lost 12 pounds then gained it all back, but it did not show!! I guess it's good it didn't show haha(:

I really want to speak up at the doctor but I"m scared!

You keep working on your goal, so will I and we can keep in touch!!

    BE PROUD OF YOURSELF TOO!(:<3

You certainly don't have to speak up to the doctor by being rude. But you should "set the record straight" and converse with her on your exercise efforts. This, I'm sure, will curb the doctor's comments. It's important, especially with our health care providers, that they know the whole story. Don't be scared - confess to the exercise

That is a great idea, next time I go if she says something I'll talk to her about it.
    Thanks for the advice.:drinker:

My friend, who is bigger than me, had this problem, she was losing inches, but the scale didn't budge. Sadly she got frustrated and just stopped trying. I kept trying to motivate her, but you can't make someone do something they don't want to do.
Maybe you could ask your Dr. to measure you BF%, tell her you have lost inches and have been exercising and trying to eat healthier. I would be proud of the inches, cause the number on the scale is just a number, muscle makes you weigh more.
For me, 8 years ago I was 165 lbs. and a size 16, now I'm 190 and a size 14. So yea, I'm heavier and a smaller size

P.S. I was a size 20 at beginning of this year and 225 lbs.

Congratulations on closet shopping! Its great when things that did not fit are now the right size!

Keep on going and track your measurements and body fat %. If you have those logs when you see your practitioner then you can document you increase in health and fitness! The number on the scale is not everything! She will recognize you improvement.

That happens to me I'm going to honest I was 200lbs and wearing 1-2X (bigger was comfy-er not I could not fit in it). Then I gained 50 lbs and I'm in XL- 1X again I go a bit bigger b/c of comfort, but I wear skinny jeans and hot tops haha.

Next time I go to the doctor I will have my mom help me talk to the doctor, I'm extremely awkward! :D

I am currently 254 and in skinny jeans, hot bathing suits and pumps:laugh:

I do love myself I just want to tone up and get rid of the excess baggage:wink:

Let me ask.. because its something that perhaps maybe the doctor isnt looking at:

When is the last time you had a complete blood work up done?

Your cholesterol panel is one of the best test 'families' to review to see how hard a patient is truly working at losing weight. The reason I say this is because with better food choices, your A1c will greatly show a difference, your CHO-Ratio will show a difference, your HDL/LDL/Triglycerides will show as well.

Unfortunately (and I say this from professional experience working IN healthcare), doctors hear lots of patients tell them "Im eating right, Im exercising" when about 80% truly dont. The physicians of family medicine often are the first line of provokers of trying to get patients to see the error of their ways. And when all else fails, you get the referral to other specialists who need to step in, and in many occasions, are the much more better methods of medical review - they find things that a PCP just cant because of the limitations set forth on their medical license.

For you though, I would not rely solely on the scale. In fact, if you can be realistic about it and use it once every two weeks. And on the day you weigh in, grab some measuring tape and track the inches... that is a good indicator as well.

Scales are NOT, will NOT EVER be accurate. Weight changes daily, hourly, etc... it is not reliable. There are too many people on MFP who are scale-addicts and ....ughhhh, I dont want to go there... its just utterly rediculous lets just put it that way.

Keep track of yourself - perhaps find out when the last blood draw was done.. and if it has been considerable amount of time, get another series done if your insurance allows it (majority of them will)... and compare the two.

With that information, use that when you discuss with your PCP... 8-)

    Totally agree!!!!

Please don't get discouraged! This is about you and how you feel. I might consider getting a new Doc, she should be supporting you! Give it a few months, if you keep eating healthy you WILL lose weight and blood tests (cholesterol, etc.) will show an improvement in your health even if the scale doesn't.

    Best of luck!

I have been through this stage. I would recommend taking a look at WHAT you're eating and get a REAL measurement of the amount of calories you need to eat, as well. I had a tough time getting my scale to move and weight-wise was in a year long plateau (photo wise, there is a noticable difference in my shape). I felt like I was eating right and exercise and changing my workouts and doing everything mentionable to break my plateau but was getting NO results... I went and had blood work done, everything was normal, and had a body fat test done. On the Body fat test, the number of calories my body needed to maintain my current weight was 100 calories less than what MFP was giving me, which makes a HUGE difference in the long run. I was also recommended the GI DIet, which opened my eyes to eating the right KINDS of food-I was eating fruit and veggies and whole wheat already, but changing up which KIND of fruit, veggies, and whole wheat I ate made a huge difference...so once I dropped my daily calorie goal and switched to better KINDS of foods, my WEIGHT (scale number) started dropping off.

    Hope that helps!

    Is your scale defective?

In all seriousness, I have a different problem. I have a scale that shows a 22lb loss and I have lost a couple inches here and there, however, I still fit into the same clothes. They do not fit that much looser and I am still waiting to move down to the next size but I am not even close. That frustrates me bc I would like my loss to be "noticeable" to others too and its not.

This is why they say everyone is different in their weight loss. Because its truuuuue!!

I don't know I use the Wii scale for the Wii Fit, I changed the batteries and it's the same or says I've gained.

Don't get discouraged you will loose the weight, for years I couldn't then one day everything changed, I shrunk a bit. My mom tells me You look thinner in the face, your waist is smaller, and I'm like YAY!

It will happen maybe it's water weight or bloating!

    Good luck!

I really hope we get it going too! I'm lactose intolerant, really badly so I can't touch any chocolate or any guilty pleasure foods except for ready salted crisps. :p don't know why its not moving, although do people find their weight goes up slightly at their delicate time in the month?
