For the 40 something desk jockey husbands out there...

I'm not prone to posting often but I hit my initial weight goal yesterday (200lbs) having dropped 33lbs in the last four months (+/-). I'm writing this to the 40 something desk jockey husbands as an encouragement and to share a couple lessons learned. You may take it for all it's worth (probably not much):

1) If nothing else, stay motivated for your wife; she may have married you for "better or worse" but you know she deserves "better".

2) Starving or radical low whatever dieting may bring quick immediate success but it won't last, it makes for horrible date nights, and you'll risk tanking your metabolism which has a terrible affect on your "quality husband/wife time"...so to speak. I learned this the hard way a couple of years ago and finally "got it" when I started in with MFP and then when I finally started taking my "goals" seriously over the last four months... life got much better. I spent as much time restoring my metabolism as I did losing the lbs. Do pay attention to what and how much you are eating/snacking but don't obsess. Getting fit isn't about punishment but about learning your body's needs, understanding how this miracle of bio mechanics works and pushing it to meet your goals (whatever those may be).

3) Lastly, make time everyday to really sweat... don't just rely on the lunch break walk (it's good but not enough)... get home... hug and kiss your wife... pat the kids on the head and go walk for an hour, rediscover push-ups and stop paying someone to mow the lawn. There are lots of great ways that don't necessarily require hours in the gym that will help get you to your goal... and no more excuses.

I'm now going after my next 10 lbs and gonna try to see if I can put some shape to this blubbering mass. :0)

Because she's worth it... heart, mind, soul and body.

Congrats - firstly for achieving what you have and secondly for a great post.

I'm in the same boat, slowly getting there and balancing everything makes it easier to lapse into my old habits. Posts like remind me I am not alone.

One thing I've also done is include my wife and kids in my activities. Like you say, there are many ways to burn calories and a family walk or some outdoor games can be fun and great quality time with the people you love.

One of my biggest NSV's has been my 14 year old step daughter giving me a hug and telling me how proud she is of me.

And including your kids in your exercise (not all of it mind) sets them a great example.

Absolutely... I discovered that I can go to my son's baseball games and practices and every four laps around the ball field fence is a mile... I can get at least four miles in per game and watch him play at the same time. One of my daughters took up tennis last year... I made her teach me... I'm not particularly good and she is kind to me but it lets me shake my routine up. As for doing things together with my wife...she's pretty hardcore but I'll need something for the winter time (walking in cold rain is just not motivating)... "DangerSass" has promised to teach me boxing the heavy bag I bought her for our anniversary (I'm such a romantic).

Thanks... I would've but she headed out pdq today... she's fast like that. All the more reason for me to get in shape. Just to try keeping up.

Thank you for giving me another reason to keep up with this. It *does* make my wife happy that I'm trying to lose weight.
