I don't list walking when I go to the grocery store or run errands. I also don't list housework like going up or down stairs doing
laundry (we have a 3-story house). To me, these are things that are part of my normal week and things I did before I started working out & watching what I eat. I just feel like I am cheating myself if I list that stuff. I am not a professional trainer (not even close, just a mom of 4) so it is just my opinion. :)
  • I think it depends on your normal activity level. If you normally have a sedentary job (low activity level), then getting out and walking in a store should count. Think about how much walking versus looking you were doing and figure out that percentage. Any walking you were doing would probably count as leisurely walking.

For those who have a higher activity level, then perhaps it wouldn't count.

    Two things.

First, your diary, your rules. Your only interest should be "am I losing weight at the pace I want to lose it?" If you are not, then it's a good idea to carefully and mindfully evaluate what you might be doing that is causing you not to meet your goals. I log things like this all the time, and I'm losing weight. Your mileage may vary.

Second, if your lifestyle is set as "sedentary", then it includes very little activity. I wouldn't log walking from the car to my desk at work, but I would certainly log a half-hour walk, even if it did include some shopping. The whole point, however, is to be as accurate as you can about the calories - so I'd log shopping as a casual walk, not a brisk one.

Kidding yourself. Did you go to Target and the Grocery before you started trying to lose weight? I read once that if you did it when you fat, don't log it when you're trying to get fit. I am also at sedentary considering that I have a deskjob, but I did plenty of shopping when i was 180 pounds, and it didn't get me fit. Only log activities that get your heart rate up. Especially if you are eating back exercise calories. Now if it is just because you want your diary to say you worked out, then that's a whole different story. Essentially it is all up to you, but don't kid yourself, it won't get you anywhere in the long run.
