So, I have gallstones and am eating almost no fat to keep away the pain until surgery (I usually eat about 70 grams of healthy fats a day and now am eating under 20). I am a litte nervous, no, a lot nervous about this extreme low fat diet.

1. I have never eaten low fat in my life so my body is like "WTF!"

2. I have been feeling SO much healthier since my health coach at work told me 3 months ago that I had a low healthy cholesterol level and needed to eat a lot more healthy fats.

3. I know that fat supports brain function (been doing better at work since eating more healthy fats)

4. I already feel so exausted and weak I keep wondering when I am going to faint

5. I may have to eat like this for 2 months! Help! Any advice?!

Please feel free to look at my food diary and see why I am feeling SO weak and what I could do to feel better
THANKS! :)

  • YIKES! Your surgery isn't for 2 months!! OMG
I have no advice on your diary - just try to push your doc to get that gallbladder out sooner than 2 months! Good luck.

Short term you should be fine. Follow the diet recommendations your doctor gave you. If you have questions or concerns refer them to your doctor or surgeon.

I am in the same boat right now, in fact the surgeon's scheduler is supposed to call me in the morning.

I don't know what advice to give...I can only lend support, as I know how you feel. I'm surprised you have to wait so long for surgery. It's a relatively simple procedure.

I had a really hard time finding foods to eat when I was waiting for mine. I was unemployed, so I had to deal with it for quite some time until I got a job with health insurance. I lost a lot of weight, but not in a healthy way. I'd be interested to see the advice you receive on this.

I have gallstones too. I decided to keep my gallbladder. I figure its in there for a reason.
After eating low fat for a while, i was able to relax a little and wasn't in pain.
Every now and then I'll have a flair up but if I eat low/no fat for a day, I'll be fine again.

Lots of lean meats and veggies and fruits. And I'm usually good with soups too. :)
    Good luck. :)

  • Wow, thanks, yeah I am keeping my gallbladder, just having them take out the stones so I can eat 70 grams of healthy fats again. I said two months becuase my consultation is on the 27th, I don't know when the surgery will be after that, and I have no idea about the recovery time and eating fats. Maybe you all have some advice? Thanks for the advice on what to eat, and maybe I will ask my doctor why I feel so weak. Maybe I need extra protien?

Here in Australia I believe they don't just take the stones anymore, the gallbladder aswell.
Have you tried any natural products to dissolve the stones over time?
  • Yeah, in the past, (I've had these for years) I tried combinations of applejuice, olive oil, and lemon juice to dissolve them. Nothing seemed to work at all, they haven't bothered me for years until now and I think that is because of my health coach's advice to up my heathy fats.

You should always keep an eye on it, though. Mine went necrotic, and fused with my liver. I was in the hospital for more than a week.

They don't normally leave the gallbladder in the States, either, but it is an option, sometimes, for those who don't want it removed.

    ^^This^^

I had a good sized gallstone not long after my son. One night of a fried food binge had me praying for death. Doc said it was not as bad as needing surgery, and suggested a low fat diet. I have done (relatively) well since then, primarily because the pain is beyond belief. It is now 4 years later, and I still have my gallbladder! A high fat meal will give me a sharp reminder, but so far, so good! If I am splurging (I love Big Macs sadly), I make sure to drink LOTS of water, and only eat one thing (like a sandwich but no fries). It seems to keep it under control. Good luck!
  • Well, thank you so much for all the advice. The fatigue was so bad this morning I called my doctor and they are having me come in tomorrow morning for tests for anemia and thyroid problems. They said a low fat diet would not cause exaustion and weakness. Thank you all for your tips though!
