Husband needs way more calories

My husband is training for Heavy Athletics in the Highland Games. He needs around 3200-3300 calories per day. When I cook for the family I go around my 1600 daily calorie goals.

So I need to help the guy get at least 1000 more calories daily. Any tips?

I was going to make homemade protein bars but at 200 calories each, it doesn't do enough. Maybe have some extra steak handy?

I would just make extra of what I was already making. So he could have an extra serving. He could always add 'extras' that you don't. Like butter on the veggies or cheese or a glass of milk. And Bedtime snacks - etc. I'm sure he will find something. :)

Red meat, steak packs a nice wallop as far as calories and nutrients. I think an 8oz Ribeye will add over 1000 calories to his daily total.

Stardust is right. Extras like a good quality butter will add calories also. I use coconut oil to top off my caloric total.
  • I do some of the following as I am the cook in the house and clearly my wife doesn't have the calorie needs that I do.

Work in a Protein shake and use either 1 cup of full fat or 1% milk, 1 frozen fruit, a medium banana and 2 Tbsp of all natural PB. Depending on the foods you buy that sucker should be around 500 - 600 calories...and it's very healthy.

Nuts and nut butters are also great. A good snack for him might be 2 Tbsp of all natural PB, 1 Tbsp of Fruit preserves on 2 slices of whole wheat bread. ~440 calories. Might be careful here if do the PB in the Protein Shake. I'd eliminate it from the shake if he wants both.

A handful of nuts themselves are around 140 calories or so

Then just make some extra whole grain (rice, wheat pasta, quinoa) and meat to whatever you happen to be making. The per serving for carbs are generally about 200 calories and meats are 120 - 160 ish.

I also like Cottage Cheese but many don't. A cup of that is ~180 calories.

Protein bars are good options too but watch the sugar.

If your husband is anything like mine he will find food when he is hungry. :)

Or throw him out of the house. LOL.

Just feed him a larger portion of what you are cooking.

I just did this for my dad, who lost 7 pounds in two weeks (and no, it's not water, it's a health problem).

Add sausage for breakfast - at least 200 calories and more if you read the labels.
You can add cream or butter to almost anything - particularly soups.
Mashed potatoes, rice. And those get cream and butter added to them.
    Rice pudding and baked custard.
    Fried rice.
Liverwurst on good dark bread with butter.

If he wasn't in training and just wanted calories I'd suggest dark beer.

Does he like peanut butter? That is an easy boost :D

Giant PB sandwich and a big glass of whole milk :)

I already cook in sled form, but I'm just not planning out the meals like I need to I think. He works 2nd shift, so I'm just not putting aside enough for the poor guy. I only had one portion of shepherds pie left for him tonight. I had to pull some meat from the freezer and make a meal for him for when he gets home.

I like the shake idea for the morning to get him a good 500calories ahead.

    Thanks for the great suggestions!

I'm in the same boat... not too many suggestions (my husband likes Larabars, which are about 200+ calories), but I'd love to see what others have to say.

Add nuts, nut butters, avocado, cooking oils, sauces and cheeses to foods you make. You can easily boost calories.
