I've always had quite a high heart rate - between 85 and 90 beats per minute. People always said that regular exercise decreases it, but I found it never decreased no matter how much walking and swimming I'd done - it was the same when my lifestyle was active as it was when my lifestyle was sedentary. However, since starting to do strength exercises - not hardcore weight lifting, but just small weights, and squats and pushups and kettlebell swings - It's gone down to between 60 and 65. Quite a big difference! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. And if it's the norm, what is the science behind it?

i'd skip worrying about the resting heart rate....really not that important as a measurement of heart health. As with most things, its spread around, because its easy to check and makes you feel warm and fuzzy...

What you want is the recovery heart rate, or how fast your heart returns to normal immediately after exercise. Follow the instructions on the site link below, i'd be interested to know your results.

I"m not worried. I assume it's a positive change. I'm just curious whether it's common, and why it happens.
