    eat well
    exercise
    have a stable sleep schedule
make sure the room is dark and quiet (except for white noise like a fan if you prefer)
no interruptions (lock your cats/dogs out)
get a nice bed (for me firm is best, but it's different for everyone)

that will fix 99% of sleep problems. if not, maybe see a doctor

I took Ambien for a little while, but it made me feel really loopy. It actually freaked me out quite a bit...I was seeing double of things and floor looked like it was tilting downhill. I wouldn't recommend it. I know that sometimes amitryptyline is prescribed for sleep, and I was on that for awhile (as an antidepressent, not a sleep aid)...it did make me sleep well, but didn't really help my depression. Now I'm on clomipramine and it makes me sleep really well plus it treats the other stuff it's supposed to treat too. Sorry, but I don't have any suggestions for OTC helpers :(

Women complain all the time that men fall asleep after sex. Better than a pill.

I actually get good results with Valerian Root. Sometimes I'll open the capsules and steep the powder with a relaxing tea. Advil PM worked well for me too. I tried several different dosage levels with Melatonin and I had stomach cramps and nightmares. Ambien had me all trippy so I had to stop that. Celestial Seasons Sleepytime Tea "Extra" also has Valerian Root. Hope you find something that works!

Sex.. what's that! I'm married!

Anyway as I said I've no issues falling asleep, it's getting a proper night sleep where the problem lies.

I have a prescription for Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine.) It's a muscle relaxer. I have sleep trouble, restless leg syndrome and fibro...but they get me a good solid 8 hours of sleep everynight and helps with my knotted muscles.

Benadryl! The active ingredient is the same as what's in the Walmart generic sleep aid. So really, just try the sleep aid because it's way cheaper than Benadryl.

I wouldn't use tylenol pm due to the tylenol can cause liver damage!! You can take benedryl, it is the same ingridient in tylenol pm that helps you sleep without the tylenol. But honestly, I would just go to the doctor and see what they have to say.

Valarian root helps is great for sleep issues and theres kava to calm the mind. Both come in pill, extract or tea form. I have also found that cutting caffeine intake to no more than 4 cups and no caffeine after noon has helped with staying asleep.

Amittiptyline, in large does it is used as an anti-depressant, in small doses it is taken for nerve pain.
I take it for nerve pain and noticed it has the side effect of making me sleep longer.
I notice such a difference that I skip a dose if I have to wake up super early and be alert right away.

A natural supplement that I use is ZMA, which is zinc, magneseum aspartate. Try it before you resort to drugs. You can get it at GNC. It will make you have crazy dreams for the forst two or three nights until your brain adjusts to the deeper mode of sleep that you get with it. Take it 20 min before bedtime and see if it works for you.

I usually just stay awake and sleep better the next day (I work graveyard shift). So yesterday I only slept two and a half hours (we have a new puppy), today I should sleep the whole five. I do sleep better with a white noise machine and when mine died I found a website that does the same thing. I chose the sound color with the most base and set the oscillate to high at the highest volume. http://simplynoise.com/

Do you drink coffee or soda during the day? I've become very caffeine sensitive the older I get so I can't drink anything containing it past noon or I'll have a restless night. This runs in my family - my mother is so sensitive, she can't even eat coffee ice cream in the evening!

Do you drink alcohol at night? Many folks don't realize that although it may help you fall asleep because you're relaxed, it will mess with your sleep rhythms so you won't sleep well.

If you take anything like Advil or Tylenol before bed, once that wears off (4-6 hours), you may no longer feel sleepy.

I take the WalMart brand of Tylenol PM and break them in half - funny you mentioned little blue pill because that's what they are! I've never felt groggy the next morning on half a dose. A full dose will leave me with that "hangover" type feeling though.

My Dad swears by a meditative exercise. He'll lay in bed and clear his mind by picturing a chalk board being erased over and over. Then he goes through a body relaxation technique - start with your toes and relax each part as you move up.

For me, a few things work... If there's something on my mind that I can't get past (OMG - I forgot to send that email to the client!), I get up and send myself an email. That way I can get the thought out of my head and relax. Mindless actions help too, like playing some solitaire on my phone or going through one of those entertainment FB pages like My Inner Child is a Drunken *kitten*. If I'm really desparate, I'll turn the light on and read - sometimes that works but sometimes the light is enough to keep me awake.

    Good luck!

Thanks have seen a few people mention ZMA. Have no idea what GNC is - guessing some American store! Anyway I see that Holland & Barrett a UK and Ireland based health store chain have got it. I'm on hols there in a few days so will get me some then. Going to give Melatonin another try tonight.
