Love Jill Scott, love that song. People know not to ever talk to me about my food. I'm Italian and the only vegetarian in my family. I'm borderline Vegan almost because I don't eat any dairy other then cream cheese on my lettuce wraps. I don't eat bread and all my sandwiches are made on Romaine lettuce leaves. I have heard it all from people about the way I eat and then one day I just got a little carried away and started threatening people lol. Not in a violent way but still getting in their faces. I got tired of the bull$hit, "Have you even tried Taco Bell before?" Actually no, and I've never eaten at a Mc Donalds, Burger King or Dairy Queen so what's your point lol.
I say eat what the hell you want and tell them to stay out of your food choices. I don't get why people even waste their breath with this kind of thing, who cares what someone eats.

They are jealous that you have the power to do it and they dont.
This. I am also fortunate, my coworkers are more likely to notice and comment if I stop going to the gym. We have our share of donuts, cake, etc., and I have learned to partake in these delicious delights and balance the remainder of my day. The coolest part about it is that they see me logging it and are pretty supportive.
It is a shame that more people do not work in that type of environment.0 -

That's quite rude of them to stick their nose where it doesn't belong and I would say just that!
I get made fun of because I have to count calories and I lean towards more fruits, veggies, whole grains and less red meat, less dairy, etc. My eventual goal is CLOSER to Vegan (I love eggs and steak though!). I was lectured today on how we are supposed to eat meat and how a Vegan diet is unhealthy. Mind you that I'm in the military and each of the naysayers are quite near or even over the limit for fat/weight standards.
One naysayer is actually just starting the Master Cleanse. Like that isn't extreme? Sorry, but I would rather EAT and count calories and exercise EVERYDAY.
Tell them that if they want to have a say in what you eat then they have to buy it! or else they can STHU!0 -
I'm in the military, so we generally have a catch-all comeback: "I want to do well on my PT (Physical Training) test." Usually there are others bringing lunch and most people won't ride you for it. They have to stay fit for it too! In fact, sometimes that spurs people to also encourage the hourly pushups and situps at our desks.
The criticism starts when cake and doughnuts walks in the door. One of the civilians always brings in doughnuts on our group workout days just to be spiteful. Very few resist. Bringing your own breakfast is the perfect excuse then. However, every birthday, every promotion, there's a cake in the office. There must have 8 of them in July alone! If you don't eat cake, it's like you're not joining the festivities and you get serious criticism. "Come on... we all ate it. Someone has to eat it. Don't spoil the fun." I will usually say I'll try to cut my own piece or act busy until most of it has been dished out. Then a quick bathroom break and everyone forgets I didn't have cake.
My boss was super cool. He knew I didn't eat the cake so he asked me what I DID want when it was my turn. I splurged on just ice cream, and I think everyone enjoyed the change of pace. For our vegetarian supervisor, we brought in a fruit basket. There's some support, but not always.0 -

Hi other military member! Yeah, it's really frustrating if you want to go vegan. We did have one at my last base and everyone was really cool about it there. Here, they'd probably take some criticism. We were doing a potluck and I checked in with the volunteers for mashed potatoes. They said "Well so-and-so is using bacon, so I have to have bacon in my potatoes too!" When I asked what the vegetarians would eat, they responded "They can bring their own food if they want to be picky!" Not cool.0 -
Or you get the oposite if you do happen to eat something other than a sald you get "should you be eating that?" or "are you counting that?" that is also annoying!!!
Umm - that would be my sister, the Queen of the Weight Watchers. A lifetime member, she went PAST her goal. Actually too far. It doesn't look that good - no boobs, no butt, and her face is sagging like hell...0 -

Oh forget about the support! I'm Navy, so we are in this culture of trying to tighten up the ranks by tightening up our waists! It's been a long time coming. 10 years ago it wasn't a big deal to be a little over. But now one PT failure can almost kill your career. My biggest challenge will be shipboard, where the lack of support really shows. The selection is limited to overcooked veggies and undercooked rice! Yum! LOL! I will have to stock up on lots of healthy snacks like dried fruits and granola, maybe even a tupperware dish black beans and brown rice that I can nuke! My last sea tour I was known for being a pickier, health concious eater, although I don't see myself as such. I LOVE CHEESBURGERS! I just also love being thin and strong! :bigsmile:0

For this reason I send healthier treats into my husbands shop. You can still make some yummy stuff that won't have you on mandatory PT two months later0 -
I started a new job in a facility that provides food for us during work hours. I was asked why I wouldnt eat the food they provided I just told them I have a gluten allergy (which is true) and they leave me alone I do get strange looks tho but I just ignore them its no one elses bussiness what I eat !0

This topic has triggered a lot of rage in me. I am male, 49 and a consultant. At one of the clients place, there were a couple of women who would attempt to put me down because of my weight. They would come together and as I passed the corridor, make comments like "When is the baby due?", "Wov!! You look pregnat", etc. It would be sudden, and completely unprovoked. I would be unprepared and be gasping for breath and these two ladies would have a good laugh. Sometimes they would be joined by a third gentleman, male, age about 65. The ladies ages would be about 45 and 55 (I guess). I know it sounds silly with people of that age saying this, but it happened.
One day it got so angry, I decided to hit back. When one of the ladies commented on my tummy size, I hit back with "Watch out, your dress doesn't suit you". This was a simple comment, but she went all angy and shouted about suing me!!! Then the two ladies decided to take the matter to management. I got scared, because I would be terminated there and then. Fortunately, I would not have to wait for another assignment, as my skills are in short supply (I am a Mathematician). Fortunately they did not report to management.
I did a few things -
i) Stpped any interaction with them. If I saw them, I would "turn my face away"
ii) Joined MFP for support
iii) Got support from a few decent people in the company with same issues as mine.
What I find surprising is that the two ladies are themselves overweight (one is probably near obese) and still they made fun of me. The guy is skinny, but imagine a 65 year old guy making such comments!!!
I guess some people are mean. We should ignore them and move on. Yet whenever I see any one of the three, I cant help feel deep rage and anger. Dunno what to do about it.0 -
Hahah all the time. I am a really picky eater, so I've come to terms with people thinking I'm weird for what I eat or do not eat. I turn down ice cream on a regular basis, I rarely eat cake, and almost never get anything with chocolate in it. I get funny looks whenever I say no. It's kind of fun now seeing their reactions.
As for bringing your own lunch, I heard on the radio once that peole who want to rise in their profession bring a lunch. Something about saving money, staying healthy, and being able to get more work done instead of leaving to get food. Could always throw that in their face and see what they say0 -
I work night shift at a hospital, so I eat lunch between 1-3am. At that time the cafeteria smells of wonderful things like thick crust pizza and fried things. Fortunately the one employee knows how to put together a great salad bar as well. It was easy for me to get tempted up there so when I got serious about losing weight I stopped going altogether and just brought my own stuff. I would get comments from a couple co-workers my age, nothing mean or anything, but along the lines of them saying how I barely eat anything now, how I would eat rabbit food, etc.. You would think that I was having a celery stick the way they talked, when I was just not having my huge wraps and onion rings anymore.. And, as seems to be the common theme of this thread, the comments came mainly from girls that were overweight, much more so than myself at my heaviest. I remember the one girl would get a salad, have chicken wings on the side, and pour 2-3 of the salad dressing containers/pouches all over her food.. It was like dressing with a side of salad.
So yeah, it happens, and as much as it may be annoying and sometimes hurtful, in the end you'll be the one smiling when you're trying on new, smaller work clothes!
Just wanted to add that now, about a year later, those co-workers went to different shifts, and now several of my other co-workers are trying to improve their fitness so I never hear anything.. We work in the basement of the hospital, and one lady starts her break by going up and down stairwells of the 9 floors I think 3 times! They even put in inspirational posters and bright colors there to encourage such activities.0 -
I can be a jerk right back to people like that. If it were me, I'd probably respond with something like, "I used to work in fast food and I know what they do to it, sometimes." If they press you for more details, just assure them that they really don't want to know.
Let them chew on that little tidbit for a while. :devil:0 -
I do get comments. Nothing snide, but I know people think I’m weird. I have ‘lunch I’ at 1pm and ‘lunch II’ at 5pm, This stops me over-eating for my evening meal and works very well for me but does attract attention. I’m lucky enough to have a fridge, a microwave and lots of kitchenware in the kitchen at work, so I keep lots in the fridge and can create some pretty delicious, elaborate meals with just a microwave. I’m pretty much the only one though, people just heat up a ready meal in the microwave.
Some comments:
- “salad again? You don’t eat enough!” (imagine me saying “crisps again? You eat too much!”)
- “making eggs and stinking out the kitchen again?”
- “you’re obsessed with vegetables”
- “don’t you ever just fancy a normal lunch?”
The worst is the insinuation that somehow, because I spend 15 mins preparing my lunch (twice a day, then eaten at my desk) I am somehow not working as hard as my colleagues (“Jeez I wish I had time to make such a nice lunch” is the most common comment)0 -

I had this too, dont listen to them. Sounds like there jealous that you have alot of will power and you can actually have healthy foods. They obviously cant be bothered to make the effort. I have had people say things to me before about what i was eating, i just tried to ignore them as much as i could. Just told them that i wanted to be healthy and a sald isnt horrble and they should try it one time!! Haha!! Safe to say i got faces pulled at me when i said that :-)

Happens all the time to me. That's just people ticked off that you have the will power they don't. Most people, especially others that are heavy, out of shape, etc., want to keep you where you are, or were because they cannot handle you being better or different. Tell them to mind their own business, and keep focusing on you and your goals. They'll be dead before they're 60.

I used to hear a lot of comments when I worked with people. Ignore them. I would just tell people I eat foods I like to eat. What is the big deal? I have never told someone....omg how can you eat so much fat or it won't kill you to eat a vegetable. lol. Turn the tables on them and ask why they don't eat fruit or something. That will shut them up. I don't care what other people eat for lunch. I care about what I'm eating and if I enjoy it. It costs to much to eat out everyday anyway. I would rather eat my own food and save money.0

I get made fun of all the time, but then they say "wow, that looks really good, you have a way with building salads". I even had a guy offer me $5/salad but I said I wasn't his personal chef.0

I never get negative comments at work. LOL Everyone here is all "ooooh! Look how good your salad looks! Where did you get those tomatoes?" Everyone here is very supportive of trying to make healthy choices.
We have lots of times here where we have "cake" for a big event, and no one is ever judgmental when I say no thank you. We also get breakfast every Wed. morning and there are lots of fruit choices, as well as yogurt and whole grain bread. There are sweets too, but I love that everyone wants the good stuff too.
I do get negative comments from my family (not my DH and kids but my extended family) if I choose something healthy over something not healthy. Not fun because I get snide comments about weight but then also pushing to eat sweets and other unhealthy choices.0 -
Yeah.. I get that sometimes. I don't really know how to respond (to the ones that I like--the ones that I don't like, it's easy! ha).. I don't want to shove healthier habits in their face, but I'm not used to receiving **** without giving it back a little, playfully of course. But weight is too sensitive of a subject to throw around like that (usually), so I usually just try to shrug it off.0
