Now I'm one that normally tries not to worry much about what other people do as long as it doesn't affect me, but for some reason I find this really annoying and I don't know why.

You're a victim of the fitness fashion industry.

Does the guy wearing his Pajamas have to wear a $200 pair of nikes and and Abercrombie & Fitch shirt to make his workouts count?

The sandals at least I can say it's a safety issue so it's pretty dumb

How? It's not like a pair of runners is going to protect your feet from heavy weights falling on them. Neither would steel cap boots honestly. Or Impervious leather uppers. The guy could be barefoot and it wouldn't make a difference.

I'm pretty sure people have been physically exerting themselves for tens of thousands of years without the benefit of clothing, why do they need a certain type to exercise now?

Granted I'm not going to rock up to the gym in a 3 peice suit and some loafers. But I could.

I could show up there wearing a cape and a gasmask if I wanted I mean who decided there was a specific set of clothing you could wear to a gym and you could only wear that?

This type of logic is how they convince men to spend hundreds of dollars on spandex tights and actually wear them.

    Serious, I see a guy walking around in a pair of these it makes me facepalm;

How is pajama pants any worse?

One or more time it happened for me, if I go home to get gym wears, I will not be able to go to gym ( gym about to close).
  • Jeans and a polo, I can see if you only have a few minutes and want to get in a quicky. Sandals I can also see. Not a safety issue. Tennis shoes are not going to protect one's feet from a falling weight. I don't care what you wear as long as you're covered.

Maybe if what they are wearing is bothering you, you should work out harder! I really don't have the strength or energy to worry about anyone else but me!
  • I work out in my pj bottoms, a vest top and tennis shoes which must be at least 10 years old (hand-me-downs from a relative). I realise that I probably look scruffy or like I am not taking it seriously but I can't afford anything else right now and the only person that suffers is me! (them shoes dont help my legs when running!) x

I actually saw a guy on the stationary bike the other week in a winter coat. It was the hottest week of the year...

I've done running on a treadmill wearing old Army boots (my usual attire, especially when riding motorbikes which I was) as I'd forgotten my trainers that day.
It so happened that I also had a tatty pair of cut-off (not fashionable bought like that, actually cut because they were torn) cargo shorts.
Been indoor rock climbing in jeans and a t-shirt because that was what I was wearing when I decided I had time to stop in there.

The only time I ever saw it as a problem was with this one guy who would workout in the same clothes he wore all day long from his job. The body-odor permeated the gym-room so fast, there were a number of people who were either dry-heaving or some 'decorated' the floor - because this guy literally stunk so bad.

I learned later this professional plumber was escorted out and asked to please clean himself up before coming to the gym because the chemicals he works with as a plumber were considered toxic for people working out. He got so flipping mad about it but the numbnut didnt care that everyone around him was vomitting... now THAT is when it gets bad!!! LOL!!!!

I havent seen the guy come back to the gym since then to be honest.

On the OP though, I think the bottom line is this: if safety is compromised as a result of what you are wearing, or-lack thereof, then yes it can be a problem on the gym. All it would take is some sue-happy freak to look for a reason to earn some moolah in court.

But, lets face it: sandals allow your feet to be more exposed to injury. And I dont mean things falling on them, but the more you sweat, I can imagine your feet will get slippery in the sandals, thus increasing your risk of slipping and falling. Not a good combination.

If you are wearing clothes that clearly are WAY too big and can get caught in the moving gears of a weight machine, you are risking injury to yourself.

If a gym doesnt have a problem with someone going in with pajama bottoms, then I say, go for it. Would I do that? ummmm, if I had pajama bottoms, I definitely wouldnt go to the gym with them.

Personally when I'm getting ready for the gym at 5am in the morning (in the dark) I open the drawer that (I assume) has my workout gear in it, fumble around until I find something that seems like a pair of leggings and a t-shirt and then I leave the house. Needless to say I have, at times, looked like a homeless person at the gym......

What really annoyed me at the gym was two females in particular would show up with heavy makeup and their hair perfectly coiffed. I am not talking makeup just to start the day. This was dark and trashy looking. You are going to the gym to workout and sweat. The hair will be a mess and the makeup is pointless.

Guy next to me in class last night suddenly asks me if the girl in front of us is wearing panties. WHAT??? I really don't care.

So I've been noticing a trend at the gym lately of people wearing things that I wouldn't consider appropriate workout gear. Just last night for instance one guy was working in the free weights area in jeans and a polo shirt. Another guy in the same area had on pajama pants and a pair of Fila sandals.

Now I'm one that normally tries not to worry much about what other people do as long as it doesn't affect me, but for some reason I find this really annoying and I don't know why. The sandals at least I can say it's a safety issue so it's pretty dumb, by why should I be annoyed by the other crap. Anyone else feel the same way that can help me understand?

Of course I'd also really like to understand why these people would want to wear those things at a gym during their workout but that's something I don't think I'll ever know.

I don't get it, either. Years ago, there was a guy who was in the gym at the same time as me who worked out in khakis and penny loafers. Although, mostly he just strutted past the ellipticals to the water fountain about 10 times a minutes, so I don't know how much exercise he actually did.

I once saw a guy JOGGING in a park in jeans, a leather belt and a button down shirt. A couple weeks ago, we saw another guy jogging in jeans.

Even more disturbing, though, was the guy jogging in flesh-colored bicycle shorts and no shirt so he looked naked. lol

lol this reminds me of these 2 girls at my gym, we turned up at the same time and they were dressed up like they were ready to go night clubbing, even walked in wearing high heels. They had their gym clothes and shoes in their bags to get changed once they got in there but what was funny was that one of the girls got out of the car wearing sandles / thongs / slip on shoes then she took them off put them in the car and then put her high heels on to walk into the gym. hahaha
  • Wow.. I could not go to the Gym with you.. you would be a huge distraction.. I would just sit and watch you..lol

People can wear whatever the f they want. People need to get off their high horse and stop judging others and thinking they can decide what others should do or wear. Do you realize you sound like the people who made the cameras film Elvis from the waist up?

I generally go training in whatever I feel comfortable with - but mainly that's trainers, shorts, and any kind of tshirt.

I honestly don't understand muscle vests and would never wear one to the gym.

At one place however me and a bunch of others did try do the wind-up once with the women who blatently just went to look at blokes... And taped a lifelike *kitten* down the inside of my leg so that when getting deep down on squats it began to peek through the bottom of my shorts...

...One woman nearly choked on her drink hahaha!

But yeah. Wear whatever you feel comfortable with, and is safe. It's not a fashion competition :)

lol, maybe I stressed a little bit :)
  • I figure exercise is great regardless of what you where. My sister in law just told me that she would never go to the gym with someone who works out in a sports bra and shorts...I guess she isn't a fan of my blog, lol. I didn't take it personally because I work out in what is comfortable for me. If other people make a judgement about that, or worry about it, they are spending energy on that while I spend energy on my workout.

If someone needs makeup and coiffed hair to feel comfortable enough to go to the gym, who cares? Maybe they feel insecure without that, or maybe they are fitting in their gym visit in between many other things. Same with jeans. If they are working out they are doing something that makes me feel happy for them. I could care less what they come dressed in.

Haha I know I usually look a hot mess in shorts and an oversized t-shirt (only thing I can thank the 80s fashion trend for) at the gym BUT I admit, I always wear red lip gloss and eyeliner. I am kind of "in public" ... it makes me feel less of a hot, sweaty mess.

On the other hand, now that I don't go to the gym around 10am with all the retired folks and stay at home moms, I feel less of a need to do this. The random 20 something dudes lifting weights at midnight are NOT looking at me like at all. I still do it though. Some of the mom's are always all made up and look perfect - and they're at least 10 to 20 years older than me. I don't know how they do that.

Yea; never got the girls in makeup thing.

Me, I find a girl who's going to the gym to make an effort much more attractive than one that thinks she'll get the man of her dreams plastering her face; but then I doubt I'm the man of her dreams, so it all works out :).
