Okay my sister is really annoying me because I love soda and I have switched over to diet which I know is still not good for you but hey its better than regular. And she is telling me that Im not going to loose weight until I stop drinking soda all together diet or not. I think she's wrong because Diet soda has no calories or sugar in it. Who is right? Can you still loose weight drinking diet coke???

I used to be a diet coke junkie - I still enjoy it, but I limit myself to one glass (or can) per day. I'm having no problem losing weight while still enjoying diet soda, but I also drink a TON of water. Everything is fine in moderation - just don't rely on diet soda to be your only liquid intake.

I've started drinking tea as my primary (non-water) beverage but I still like to grab a can of diet coke every now and again! I probably drink 3 or 4 a week and I've been losing weight.

    eApps,
Diet soda contains no calories, because it contains no sugar, which helps with the calories in/calories out equation. But, it has sweeteners in it that make you crave that sweet taste. So you're more likely to eat something with sugar in it if you're body is in need of something sweet.

Of course you can loose weight while drinking diet soda, but in your experience are the heavy people you see drinking diet soda? Are the healthy people drinking water?

It is probably much to your advantage to drink 1 regular soda a week than 1 diet a day, even though the regular counts against your calories for the day.

  • You can still drink it but be cautious because the sodium in soda, rather it be diet or not can cause your stomach to expand which could end up making you eat more than you usually do.......so just be cautious about it and I think you will be fine!

diet sodas do have sodium which can make you retain water. I used to drink a lot of diet soda (several cans a day). I cut back and now have only a few a week and drink lots of water.

Yes, you can lose weight and still drink diet Soda. I've been at this a year, and just now am starting to ween myself away from it. But it help me quit drinking regular Mt Dew a year ago. So if it helps you quit regular pop, by all means. But I've come to a point where I'd like to quit drinking pop all together.

as for the sodium content. A 12oz can of Diet Coke has 40 mg of sodium, as opposed to 8 oz of a V8 which has 480mg!

    Preception is not always reality.
  • I haven't had a can of soda for honestly 2 weeks. I like to make Great Value Sugar Free drink mix, it also has 0 calories and 0 sugar. It sufices me so I don't grab a can of soda.

I drink diet soda (only here we call it pop or coke  ) when I drink pop. I have cut way back on it though, but not because I think that it affects my weight loss. Of course, my high was only one a day anyway. Now it's closer to one a month. The only real reason for the cutback is that I decided that I didn't really like it well enough to spend money on it. Anyway, what I want to say is that for me, I have never been able to tell the difference weight loss wise. I have always heard that it makes you eat more sweets; for me that is just not true. And yes, I have seen heavy people drinking diet coke and apparently healthier people drinking water. I have also seen heavy people eating carrots and apparently healthier people eating candy bars and potato chips. I think that you would have to know more about a person's lifestyle to judge what is making them the way that they are than just observing what you see them drink. If you want your diet soda once a day, and feel deprived without it, I would say go for it. Many people that I know have lost weight while drinking it in moderation.

Well, the first time I lost weight, the only major change that I made was switching from regular soda to diet. I lost about 45 pounds with just that one change. But I also drank 2-3 Pepsi's a day, so we're talking about dropping 450 calories/day just in beverages. That weight loss obviously wasn't permanent, and now I am trying to do things the right way.

If it makes you crave real sugar, or if you trick yourself into thinking that since your drink is now calorie free that you can eat more...then maybe you should consider weaning yourself off soda altogether.

But if you are smart about your other healthy choices, then simply switching to diet soda should be applauded as a step in the right direction, and it shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I say good for you!
  • I have lost weight both ways. The only difference is I feel better when I am only drinking water but I still lose weight just as fast.
  • As far as the calories go, yes there are none. However, the artificial sweetener that is used in diet soda and low fat foods that contain aspartaim and the phenyl.... stuff turns into formaldayhyde when it is digested into our bodies. formaldahyde is what morticians use for dead people. How yummy does that sound?
