I think it's also easy when doing cardio to get used to whatever you're doing, so you don't push yourself. With weights you are pushing yourself to do more reps, more weights, etc. I use a HRM for cardio now and work really hard to keep my heart rate higher even as I get fitter. My RHR has dropped from 68 to 51, and I really have to push myself to keep my heart rate up when I exercise. While my cardiovascular endurance has definitely improved, it hasn't done to my body what weightlifting has!

What do you guys recomend? and how much should I lift so that i don't gain muscle over fat. I just want to tone as I am loosing the weight.

Weight lifting, if you over eat, you build muscle, if you are in a deficit, you lose fat. It's like a magic pill that is really hard to pick up!

    love heavy lifting!

YES!!! I love lifting weights!!!! My legs are a prime example of cardio gone bad. I was 105 pounds in the picture on the left, but I had cellulite on my legs. The picture on the right is me after 3 years of weight training, and now I weigh 112 pounds. Hit the weights!

Thanks for responding Chrisdavey. I went to the gym on post and looked around today. I think I will start with some of the machines to build on resistance training and am signing up for the Seniors Arobics swim classes. Maybe after a while I will feel more like testing some of the assisted weight machines. I don't think I will ever be able to do dead weight lifting but as long as I take my time and do not exceed my limits, it should at least be beneficial? They have folks on site to assist with most everything. Walking has made a huge difference. BTW: Your progress has been nothing short of amazing!

    Thanks mate

And sounds like a good idea to me. Just ease into it and get someone qualified to check you're form on anything new.

Definitely beneficial. As people age, muscles deteriorate. Doing any sort of resistance training is basically giving them a reason to stay around. Also helps with bone density which is another big issue as people age. Good luck mate

    Kdiamond: incredible transformation!

Cardio only people don't like to hear it, but you can lose fat weight with just lifting alone, a moderate calorie deficit, and no cardio. Have had lots of clients do it.

You're right I didn't want to hear that because I like my running. Lol. I've had about a two month stall though even with increased distance. I guess I'm going to have to try the lifting and prove you all right. Lol. Do you recommend more reps or heavier weights. I'm not looking to bulk just tone and lose weight.

This question gets answered a lot:

Do a weight that is challenging for 6 - 10 reps-ish, next time you go in try to increase the weight

You won't bulk because you don't have to testosterone levels of a man. just like you don't get fat over night you also don't get HUGE JACKED SWOLE over night.

3 sets of 10 isn't some magic lifting number, you can do 5x5, or 4x8, what ever as long as you are challenging your muscles you should see progress.
  • How should I start a weight lifting program? I don't belong to a gym and I'm a senior! LOL! So I need to ease into this.
