Muscle spasms

I have been on MFP for close to a month. I have done well, drinking 8 cups of water, going well below my calorie suggestion, and upping my exercise. However, for the last week, I have been bothered by muscle spasms--they feel like cramps in my side and back. If I sit for a half hour or so and then get up, I feel like I'm going to break. Then, once I get moving, the spasms disappear. I have been playing golf every day, swimming every other day and yesterday I did a weightlifting ciruit. Am I going too hard? Is it something that will pass? To I need to supplement something? Feedback will be appreciated.

Do you think they are really spasms or just over all sore from being worked ?

Do you think your diet might be a little low on potassium or magnesium? You could try eating a banana each day to help with the potassium. Oranges are also high in potassium. I think most leafy greens are high in magnesium but you could google it to see!

I never believed in chiropractic care until I had muscle spasms so bad that my back was locked up with terrible pain. I think that golf tends to work one side of the back harder than the other. Maybe look into chiropractic? I hope you figure this one out. Best wishes for achieving your weight loss and health goals.

That was my thought as well. I have averaged almost two bananas a day, but haven't eaten very many veggies at all. After work, I went swimming (laps for 20 min.) and came home. I haven't had any spasms since getting home and I have been basically sedentary.

Muscle spasms are often an indication of magnesium deficiency. I used to have terrible spasms, but I haven't had a spasm in months as I am now periodically supplementing with magnesium citrate powder. Check out the "natural calm" website to see if you have any other signs of deficiency, which you probably will because 80% of north americans are lacking magnesium.

Make sure you are getting enough protein for your muscles to properly repair themselves too. If you have calories to spare adding a protein shake after a workout wouldn't hurt. You can use whey or soy. (Soy causing testosterone problems in males has been debunked for a few years now.) I like a protein shake+banana combo post-workout.
