First the shootings-then locked IN the gym after hours

Shooting on my block!--near the Empire State Building--during the time--I normally would have have finished my work out, and can be found on THAT street--doing errands and such. Only today--was stuck working at my home office. I found out ONLY after three different family members from out of state---Calif---Washington each called me to see if I was okay. They'd been watching the shooting on the news----but my TV was off. I easily could have been caught in the shooting fire---as that's where I am in the early mornings. Gave a prayer of thanks and prayed for those caught in the tragedy.

So finally tonight or technically last night--I finally get to the gym bypassing all the TV camera trucks blocking the streets and and periphery---get on the ellip----and reward my self from a sad and odd Friday--with a leisurely steam sauna----get dressed, come up the stairs---amid blaring music---and proceed to the glass double doors to leave --and find that the doors are locked.

I look around ---the lights on everywhere ,TV monitors are going-music blasting---but it appears deserted. I call out--nothing--shout at the top of my lungs--nothing--hunt around for a person --nothing.
I realize I have been locked in--go to the phones to call another chain location ---that would have emergency procedures to get me out. the phones are computer programmed not to allow outside calls without a code.

I call out to passerby and these nice guys from Argentina---try to help ---but there's a language barrier---they call the police who are very rude to them and then the cops are rude to me ---one cop is hopping on foot because he's concerned that a huge grandaddy cockroach crawled over it and I am finally in tears---the other cop is shouting ---literally getting red and shouting CALM DOWN---

I was like---you are going to tell me to calm down as you are SHOUTING? The other cop is furiously trying to kill the cockroach stamping his feet on the ground--I had tried to tell them say you HAVE to call the other club locations---while they are still open
but I got tired of dealing with dumb and dumber

And I stalked out of the sight---and slumped on the stairs leading up to the second floor. They stayed and then left their lights flashing. I resigned my self to sleeping there--but the music was untenable. I explored and found a door to small xerox room and it was quiet---so I prepared to bunk down there----as I got ready to lay down --I noticed there was another door--that was slightly ajar. I opened it and to my shock--it led to a brightly lit lobby of an office building. I went to their front doors but they were locked too. There was laughter and conversing so I followed the voices and it was the night clerk behind a big desk.
FREEDOM!

I explained I was locked out---and he told me I could let myself out and he beckoned to a different set of doors
and I was free.

I learned---freaking out did no good whatsoever--all the tears in the world did not help--the shouting --the insults--nothing
it was only when I decided to surrender--to accept the situation--- that God led me to the open door.
However-- I feel entitled to a rebate on my membership fees because of this

It was a bizarre Friday--- but one good thing about an awful day--is that it simply has to end

Holy smokes! So glad you're ok! What a crazy night. I was just right there last week at the Shelburne on Lex bt 37th and 38th. My in-laws used to live at 320 Lex where there is now a Black-something restaurant.

Woah! That's like something out of the Twilight Zone. Also, I'm glad you weren't caught in the shooting. So scary...

Also, this has nothing to do with your post, but I just stalked your profile and holy crap! I cannot believe you are 55. You look amazing!

Bizarre. I'd definitely ask for a rebate. Seems really odd to me that they wouldn't do a check of the saunas and locker rooms before leaving. Also ***** at them for wasting all that energy at night.

God was protecting you that day...

At leas you found a way out, if I was still stuck i would've just stayed in the break room eating something or watching something on my phone after yelling at the officers for being idiots...

But seriously, you are protected from god today... thank god you weren't in the shooting or anything in that matters. :3

there were only LITERALLY a few of us! It would not have been hard to remember that I did not leave--I came in near the end for a quick workout

the guy on duty was sullen and moody--and unpleasant to me

I would not have put it past him to have done it ---maybe not exactly on purpose---but not exactly an accident--either
totally going to raise the roof---with mgmt

When in doubt, a 45lb plate makes a great doorway out of a sheet glass window. xD

I thank my lucky stars every day someone on my street fires a gun that I'm not the target, that I wasn't walking in the street to even have that chance. So yeah I can relate to that.

You were definitely being watched over, even if you got a couple of oddball cops. Sometimes we can't help but freak out, but we always need to remind ourselves in some way, all will be right in the end. And it was for you. I think after that sort of day you deserve a good chill out treat like a good bubble bath and book or a good movie or something.

    HAH!

I actually--contemplated that  But sanity resurfaced--of course, and I decided---I liked my freedom too much---for the long term--even if I was denied --it for the short

the irony was when I did --surrender it it all---was when I found ---the way--out
    and simultaneously found THE WAY~~

Of course, a variation of this will happen at some point --AGAIN! And I won't have learned a thing--that's how lessons seem to go.
  • Yeah, glad youre okay. Wouldn't want to be one of them 9 people shot by NYPD's newbies who missed their target in a crowd of people. It really disheartens me to hear that. Glad the shooter got taken down though. I hope I never have to live through something like that. That kind of stuff is best left for TV.

But seriously, you can usually call 911 from a locked down phone line-- plus most places have to have an emergency exit.
