High Protein Intake

Hi all,

I've switched over from WW to MFP and have a question about protein.

In the week I've been doing MFP alongside my other plan, (before making the decision to switch to MFP for good, which happened this morning!), I've been in the green for all of my stats...apart from protein. With the protein I've been pretty much up to my limit or over.

Is this bad for weight loss? I mean, obviously if I were over calories, fat or carbs, I know it would be...but I had thought protein was an alright thing? Or is this going to be a problem for my weight loss?

Thanks!

MFP automatically sets its protein goals way too low for some reason. You should probably be aiming for at least 100g per day.

I think the protein they set on here is somewhat low. I know for me I try to get 100 grams a day. I am exercising about five or six days a week and I feel stronger with more protein. I also feel fuller, longer with some protein. So, I would say enjoy your protein!

It depends on what type of protein you're eating. Animal protein over the years will cause heart disease and cancer. To be healthy and live long you want protein from nuts, whole grains and vegetables. Protein isn't bad for weight loss but animal protein will kill you.

Umm, no it won't as a matter of fact animal protein is complete whereas proteins from nuts, grains, vegetables are not. Animal protein will not kill you.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies!

Either way on the animal protein v vegetable...I'm a vegetarian, so everything I get is either through pulses, veges, dairy or quorn (meat substitute made from mushrooms)...(and joanna, I love your pic LOL)

I'm roughly taking in about 60g a day, so that seems like it's under if anything! LOL Need more beans!

And 200+ a day McBully! With 50 Ibs weightloss? Wow, I've got a lot of mushrooms to eat to catch up with that! LOL

    Thanks!

Eat lots of protein from all sources. If you don't want your animal based ones then by all means send them my way and I'll protect you from it's deadly side affects. I don't like tuna though.

wow 200G is a lot of protein! That's how much I want to be taking, but I find it hard. Even with a shake or two I am at about 150 g a day.

I'm not a vegan. I love meat but stopped eating it last year because I watched Oprah. Lol!!! I still eat seafood sometimes but after finding this study and hearing all kinds of info about the USDA & FDA and how they have their hands in everyones's back pocket I wouldn't believe anything they said. Btw, the guy that headed up The China Study grew up on a farm and that was their family business.

I do feel better now that I don't eat meat. I haven't been sick, I have more energy and feel less sluggish.

Oprah? Now there's an authoritative source.

Perhaps you might want to read some commentary from some more informed folks:

Check out The China Study. It's the most extensive nutritional study ever. It will change your mind.
The China Study has been pretty much debunked. Correlation does not equal causation.

I had gastric sleeve surgery in June. I am 4'11" with a medium build. Anyway, my doctor set my protein intake at 60grms minimum per day She said anything over that was great. Don't know if that helps any or not.
