anyone know of where to buy smaller sized plates?

I'm not really talking about salad plates or lunch plates...i'm talking about a full set of plates that are about the size they used to be about 40 years ago.

i found these plates a few years ago at a garage sale . they are about what i'm looking for, 7 inch surface area (10 inches total with border, yes i would like a border) unfortuantly i'm breaking them faster and faster these days. stupid gravity.

...however they are aparently considered antiques or something because they are 14 dollars a PIECE. i'd like to spend like... $2 a piece if possible.

Where did you guys buy your smaller sized plates :O?

antique stores, estate sales, thrift stores, eBay. Around here you could have good luck at consignment stores.

I'd try ebay - maybe amazon.
  • Well...thanks but i knew that already. I was wondering if anyone knew of any specific companies that made "new" sets? i'm sort of afraid to buy antying vintage or antiquey because of the possibility of it containing lead...

We bought some smaller ones at K-mart. They were marketed as "salad plates." We use them for our dinners.

Not for $2.00 a plate, but you can try replacements.com. For $2 each, thrift stores and garages sales are probably your only options...

As far as companies, the ones we bought are Martha Stewart's brand. We got a set of four for about $6 on clearance.

Anthropologie! I just bought a beautiful small plate from there, it makes me not even want to eat bad things off it because it's too pretty and less of the good foods because it's small

At $2 a plate, you'll have to settle for those plastic plates at Target. There's an entire aisle of them in varying shapes, sizes, and colors.
  • http://www.preciseportions.com/ I googled this because I was interested, found that website.

Corelle might make some, and they have outlet stores (at least on LI they do) where you can get it for really cheap.

Did you ever think to use the cake plates in a set for your meals? Maybe not for company, but on regular days at home it'll be much smaller lol.
  • check out overstock.com. They have some smaller plates for good deals.

Sorry, maybe you should have been more specific with your question. At the risk of being too "obvious" with my second attempt at help, have you tried Google?

Not so much for portion control, but more because I don't like having my good plates get all beat up in the dishwasher, we eat mostly off plastic picnicware. The plates are a little smaller and dirt cheap. For casserole type dishes, which I eat often, we eat out of bowls... also plastic picnicware.

You can get a kit to test for lead on dishes, but it'll cost more than yard sale dishes themselves. http://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-LT1-Premium-Lead/dp/B000FSOYSQ

I know you said not salad plates but why not? I only buy salad plates and sometimes what might be called a pasta bowl (for my 'true' salads). They are the same designs as the bigger plates but just smaller. Isn't that what you are looking for or am I confused?

What about focusing on putting other stuff on the plate, rather than making the plates teensy?

We eat loads of vegetables. If I used a small plate, I wouldn't fit all that yummy goodness on there....

We have (and need more) of these awesome small sized shallow bowls made my Mikasa that we use for almost any kind of meal becuase they are just the right size! They were from my grandparents and probably were not $2 each, but there might be a Mikasa outlet where you could buy a set for a decent price.

I don't know, I eat a LOT of veggies and filling up a dinner plate would still be a challenge. Using smaller plates, basically tricks the eyes so you don't have so much empty space on a plate.

Not true. You have to be a smart shopper and hit the clearance aisle. I don't know if they do clearance at Target, but they have them all the time at Kmart.

Do you have an IKEA nearby? I don't know about the American IKEAs, but the ones in Scandinavia have plates of a lot of different sizes, shapes and colors.

These are a bit pricey, but have you considered these portion control plates?

They seem to fit your requirements perfectly.

    Also worth a look: http://www.slimware.com/

    Good luck in your search.

First result that came up when I Googled "small dinner plates":

    http://www.squidoo.com/small-dinner-plates

I agree with the earlier post about adding more veggies to the plate. Since I started eating more veggies, it takes up more room on my plate than anything else.

These are about double your price. but more what you were asking for, I think.

I second Corelle. The normal plates at my house are about 10 inches. However, they're about 20 years old so I'm not sure if they still make them.

We love Fiesta buffet plates. They're more expensive than $2/each, but they're the perfect size. The luncheon plates are the same size, just a different edge.

They're about a quarter of the way down the page. Ignore the $15 price...they're regularly on sale for $10.99, and Kohls usually has a 20-30% off coupon code at the same time as the sale. Buffet plates are only available at Kohls but the luncheon plates will be at other stores (Macys, Bergners, etc).
