Protein shakes while trying to lose weight?

My main concern is to lose weight, is it a bad idea to have protein shakes even tho i'm just trying to lose weight, will it slow down my weight loss?

If you can't get all your protein from foods and if it's within your calorie allowance then it's fine. protein has a higher thermic effect than either fat or carbs hence why a medium/high protein intake can be useful for losing weight.

As long as you are staying within your calorie goal, go nuts :)

If you hit your calorie defecit, you will lose weight

I find that protein shakes help me lose weight since they're often a meal replacement.

what is your protein goal set at right now? If you are using the standard settings, you might consider increasing it to about 25-35%. The standard setting is pretty low.

When losing weight, the protein (and exercise) will help you retain what muscle mass you have, so it is a good idea. The best protein sources are always natural, unprocessed, lean meats and vegetables, but protein powder makes it a lot easier and cheaper to hit all your nutrition goals.

    Yepper this guy is correct.
  • I gained weight on protein shakes but then lost it after I got off them. Also had joint pain, I think because of the dairy protein but obviously not everyone will be affected that way.

Thanks guys! .. Meal replacement is why i like protein shakes, sometimes i honestly cant use up all my calories because i'm not too hungry so i drink a protein shake to use up some of those remaining calories.
  • My Doctor recommends shakes for me, and they seem to help.

I do a Special K protein shake after a workout. It fills me back up from what calorie's I've already burn and helps me to maintain the lean muscle I worked out at the time.
