Hi, I am new and I have a question: Is it Healthy for me to eat cereal every day for breakfast? I have Kashi heart to heart toasted honey oat cereal, and I LOVE it. I have a bowl almost evrty morning with strawberries or banana. It fits into my daily calorie and carb DA, but what do you guys think? My diary is open if you want to take a look.

I am an 18 year old female, 134 pounds, 5'7", want to get down to 120 pounds and tone up.

I think you aren't eating enough. You're fine eating the cereal. But maybe add some higher calorie stuff too like bananas and nuts.

It is purely up to you. I find that on the days on which I have whole grain cereal for breakfast I am much more likely to stay on track all day. So that's what I do. Cheerios or Shredded Wheat with nonfat milk usually and sometimes fruit, sometimes Grape Nuts with fruit and yogurt. I think it satisfies the crunch urges without the high fat of snack foods. Also, if you tend to need extra iron, fortified whole grain cereals pack a punch (Grape Nuts especially).

I eat cereal 5-6 times a week. I aim for cereal with whole grains and low sugar (read the labels!) with skim milk. I think it's fine; it fits into your daily goals (calories and carb) and helps give you an energy boost in the morning. It's also quick and easy. Just make sure you're only getting one serving (or sometimes two, but log it that way! -- measure, measure, measure)

The only challenge is that, even with whole grains, cereal generally won't satisfy you all the way till lunch. I like to plan a light mid-morning snack that has some protein, like almonds & craisins, or fruit and yogurt. Again, you just have to plan appropriately and make sure the snack is available (ie, pack it for work or school) and will still fit within goals.

Yes, if you like it enought to eat every day, and it fits your calorie allowance, go for it. Plus, that particular cereal has good fiber, low sodium, reasonable sugar.

I have about 4 different breakfast standards. A little more variety than you, but still, pretty predictable. I do a smoothie, a piece of whole wheat toast with PB and banana, overnight oats, or Kashi Cinnamon Harvest. If I'm feeling motivated on the weekends, I might do eggs.

Biggest thing on boxed cereal is to watch sugars and sodium, although the Kashi you listed isn't bad for either. Just make sure that you're getting the proper serving -- it's not "one bowl," it's usually only 3/4 of a cup or one cup. Or you could do what I do, measure it on a kitchen scale (most cereals include a grams weight with the serving size on the nutrition label), it's a little more accurate due to settling giving you too much or air-spaces in between the cereal bits in the measuring cup giving you too little.

Oh, and since you'll see it come up in multiple replies, let me add:

    IIFYM!

    and

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

I do the serving size (3/4 of a cup, just a smidge over if I am really hungry, but I log it) Also, what does IIFYM mean?

I eat grape nuts almost every single day.

Simple answer: If it fits your macros, it's fine

If you feel like getting more complicated: Go for the whole grains on carbs. Don't eat things if you can't understand more than 2 things in the ingredients list.

Sure... I just mix a single serving of cereal with Greek yogurt instead of what I would normally do which is two servings of cereal, with milk.

I love grape nuts. I eat then hot with brown sugar and milk. I know the sugar kinda defeats the heathy part but i don't add that much.
