I took 1.5mg last night for the first time and it knocked me right out.0

I decided to try the Melatonin since I saw so many good reviews from this site! Unfortunately for me, it just didn't work. It helped me fall asleep just fine- however, I woke up at 6am each morning I tried it with a terrible headache ( I tried it 3 times over the course of week). And like others mentioned- I had some really strange strange and vivid dreams (normally never remember my dreams).0

I take melatonin almost every night, but a kind with valerian root in it. Valerian, if it works for you, is probably a better first try than melatonin.
I'm not sure what your life-schedule is like, but if you can, before you go to bed, dim the lights (or turn them out) while you're watching TV or checking your email ... melatonin forms in the brain as a reaction to darkness. Some people think it's a bad idea to alter the natural production, but in all honesty I fall asleep just fine without it, just not as quickly.
I don't notice side-effects unless I don't get at least 4 hours. Then I'm just groggy.0 -
I've taken melatonin. It helped a lot! It didn't really give me any side effects, but I would only take it when I was for sure going to be able to get at least 8 hours or else it left me groggy all day. But other than that it was great.0

Anybody take Melatonin? Do you have any side effects? Since I stopped taking champix, I can't sleep unless I take some Advil PM and I'm looking for alternatives. My doctor seems to think I should just go to sleep...I wish!
Full supporter and works great for ADHD, Autistic, and HSP children/adults.0 -
Love the stuff and yes it absolutely works !!! Oh and no side affects why because your body already has melatonin it what aids you to sleep so nope no side effects0

I take 10mg of Melatonin AND 50mg of Amitriptyline and can toss and turn for hrs before I actually fall asleep.0

side note - I find chamomile tea really helps for sleeping as well.
Wish that worked for me. I take Soothing nature garden sleep remedy chewable tablets. They consist of melatonin, lemon balm, chamomile and lavender.
I usually can't fall asleep till 2 a.m. It sucks!0 -
I take 3mg of melatonin every night. The supplement I take also has chamomile extract and valerian extract. I sleep very well when I take melatonin. I don't get the vivid dreams. Other sleep aids make me groggy and I am sensitive to antihistamines.0

Personally I can't take it. When I do I have very vivid and very disturbing dreams. Certainly not the desired effect. However, it is mostly natural and shouldn't cause any long term side effects. It may take a couple nights of use to notice a difference but hey, it's worth a try.
Exactly my reason for stopping taking it. While it did work for sleeping, the disturbing/outlandish nature of the dreams themselves would wake me up. Strange! Glad I wasn't the only one.0 -
I do. Take it every day for years. There is an adjustment period when you first start taking it with lots of wild dreams. Some were good but strange, but there were some pretty scary nightmares in there too. That usually goes away after 3-5 days. It is your mind's way of clearing the cobwebs that have built up due to sleep deprivation.
I wake up in the morning refreshed, and should I need to get up in the middle of the night for any reason, I have no problem waking up and functioning normally. Other sleep aids I've tried left me feeling disoriented and in a fog until they wore off. Even then, mornings were not fun.0 -
Since I've started working out regularly again, I cannot sleep worth a damn every other night. I've taken melatonin, but it doesn't work very well for me. When it does seem to work, I am drowsy then next day and I do have some weird dreams. Took four 3 MG tabs earlier tonight and I'm still wide awake. I've tried turning off everything and just lying in bed, I've tried listening to music, to lessons on my iPhone and even took a tylenol with codeine and still can't fall asleep.0

I searched this topic because I had a really bad experience yesterday with Melatonin.I was groggy and wanted to eat junk food all day. I went to McDonald's 2x in one day - for breakfast and lunch! And I didn't make low cal/low fat choices. I ate the way I eat when I'm under stress and haven't had enough sleep. I felt disconnected the entire day. Just wanted to take the path of least resistance (meaning not exercising, cooking, packing healthy food for the day or taking the stairs at work). I'm not taking them anymore! I'd been taking half a tablet = probably .5 mg every night for about a week. It had been helping me fall asleep but I felt slightly groggy in the morning and not rested but then that's normal because I don't usually feel rested after a night's sleep since I'm a night owl and getting up in the morning is rarely easy for me. I took the whole tablet Sunday night because I had stayed up really late the night before and so my sleep cycle was off. I needed to go to bed early on Sunday because I was aiming to get up at 6am on Monday...start the week off right and all that crap. I fell asleep about 11 pm and woke up at 2:45 am and could not fall back asleep. I debated about getting up but thought I better try to get more sleep but I ended up just watching TV until 6am and then I fell asleep - of course at the time I wanted to get up. I woke up about 830am and made it into work. I was able to think clearly at work but physically, like I said, I didn't want to exert any energy taking care of myself.0
