Pain while running

Hi, I did my first long run outside yesterday, and got some pain in my right wrist/hand. I couldn't straighten out my fingers without feeling this sharp pain. It was on the top of my hand as well as my wrist. I ran on the treadmill this week a couple of times as well, for the same time with no pain. Any suggestion on what it could be? Anyone else with this same feeling? The pain eventually did go away but it was uncomfortable to run with. I do wear a watch on that wrist but I also wore it when on the treadmill.

That sounds like a pinched nerve or something else that would be best diagnosed by a doctor. That's weird though, and I'm glad the treadmill helped! But I might consider a trip to your doctor to be on the safe side.
  • It could be that you are tightening your neck/shoulders when you run thereby affecting some of the nerves from your cervical spine leading to your hand. I can only suggest consciously trying to relax them when you run, but if that doesn't help at all - I'm not sure what else to suggest!... Good Luck!

I agree with the neck/shoulder tightening! I had this problem a lot when I first started doing long distances outside. I focused on keeping my shoulders back and relaxed, and positioning my head so that my spine is always in line (but it's sooo hard not to look around!!). Good luck figuring things out!!

Thanks, I'll try relaxing, I guess I never really thought about it. I do like to look around.

I agree relax when running and if it still persist then go to your doctors.

Good Luck with your half...... some day I'll be back into doing marathons and small races.
    keep it up
