Anyone lost over 100 pounds with low carb?

Hi everyone, I started on here a few weeks ago, and I think I'm off to a good start with 15 pounds off. I have another 120 or so to lose, though, and wondering what to expect as far as a time frame. I want to get it off as fast as possible, whatever it takes. Please don't respond telling me to take it slow-- even my doctor agrees that I need to get it off as fast as possible, and is pushing me to do gastric bypass, but I want to do this without surgery.
I'm currently keeping calories around 1200 and carbs below 20. Trying to not eat TOO much fat. Drinking lots of water.
Is there anyone here that has lost 100+ pounds on low carb? How long did it take? How much did you exercise? Did fast weight loss have a bad impact on your skin? Any tips or recommendations?

I've lost close to 150 LBS doing low carb. I started out with doing Atkins Phase 1 induction for 6 months,then I slowly moved to Phase 2 without all the fruit and kept my carbs from 25-30 and I am back doing around the same. I notice when I eat more than 30+ carbs a day I don't lose weight as quickly or I even plateau,which is what happened for 3.5 months. My carb intake was around 100 grams of carbs for those months and I ate around 1300 calories,exercised like a mad woman and decided to lower my carbs back down and the scale moved again. My body is pretty sensitive to high amounts of sugar,even sugar that is natural from fruit which can add up quickly when you consume as much as I did,I was an apple,banana fanatic and those are pretty high in sugar and carbs. For some reason if I do have a small piece of fruit my stomach hurts badly so I don't touch it anymore.0

Hi. I did the David Kirsch diet- I think it is called the New York Diet. Anyway it is a low carb and low fat diet. I found it very effective previously-lost about a pound a day with exercise and diet. It is extremely healthy on the first phase no dairy, sugars- fruit or chocolate, alcohol, coffee, wheat etc basically have to cook a pretty much all your food- no ready meals, bread or processed foods. You do have a lot of turkey, egg whites, lean meats, fish, green tea, cruciform veg and salad. The recipes in the book are really nice. To be honest, I won't be doing it as extremely as before as found it really hard to socialise with it and time manage but is good if you have a lot of time for prep of food and exercise pretty much everyday for 1 hour. ... depends on your definition of "low carb"...
I have released over 100 pounds - and my eating is more of a protein focus, with veggies and fruit added. I don't worry about carbs from the veggies and fruit... I don't really eat a lot for breads, pasta, potatoes. I find that with this approach - I feel better. It's not that I don't ever have grains - I have bread occasionally but will choose say quinoa versus rice or pasta. However? I find that lettuce works well for wraps, mini peppers hold chicken salad, etc. Oh, and I ignore the carbs in say - milk. I do end up with carbs/sugars in some of the salad dressings, marinades, etc. that I use - but I try to vary those and use the lower sugar ones when possible. I also eat a lot of peanut butter (have a low sugar, low sodium kind that I love) - but that's been due to needing to up my calories and PB with a banana? Great for increasing cals! ha, ha.
I do eat more calories than what you are looking at... but I also exercise like a madwoman most of the time. It's easy for me to burn 20-25,000 calories in a month. I love to exercise - and therefore have had to work on getting more cals in. Who knew that'd be so hard?!? ha, ha.
My biggest drops in weight were when I started - going from one meal a day to eating 3-4? HUGE difference. The other big drop was when I started exercising few months later. Now? I took about 2 months off from focusing on things like I had before... so, I'm hoping that as I refocus and get going again in September I can see the changes start again. To lose the first 100? Was under a year... it could've been faster, but I figure it happens in the time that it should... Since getting to that monumental mark? It's been slow and more frustrating... but again - September is gonna bring some great changes... It's fall, the weight is about to fall as well!

Define fast? It's taken me over a year to lose 85lbs. I still have another 65lbs to lose. I've not done low carb, but done low GI which is sustainable.
It's fine to say you need a diet that will make you lose weight fast, but if you're not going to keep it up and therefore not lose at all what's the point?
Having that much to lose you will lose a lot fast eating that low. I hope it's sustainable. Eating at 1800-1600 calories I lost 55lbs in the first six months. I had a LONG plateau which has slowed it down but I currently have an athletes resting heart rate, play sport to a high level and can splift very heavy weights. I'm incredibly healthy and am losing the weight I have now for future health reasons and vanity.0 -
This is my first post.
I lost 95 pounds in 9 months back in 2008. I wanted to lose it very quickly, because I was trying to get pregnant and needed the hormonal surge from the released fat in order to ovulate. My daughter will be four in February!
I was strict under-20 carbs for three months. Not NET carbs: total carbs.
I ate TONS of fat. That's the only way to get your calories high enough to avoid passing out or losing your hair, your skin tone, or your mind. (I never counted any nutrients but carbs, and some days calories just out of curiosity to see where I was.)
Also, you must drink tons of water. Like, an ounce per pound of body weight. (see: not passing out)
I didn't exercise. I don't like to. I got pretty flabby at the end, but I was MUCH thinner.
I went from 299-204, to give you an idea of my body shape. The bigger you are, the faster this method should work for you initially.
Good luck! I'm trying this again, without trying to lose it fast, in an effort to maintain a long-term stasis. However, I know what it's like to have health goals that require immediate weight loss, and I would love to support you on your journey. Additionally, I will do whatever I can to help you avoid the knife, as I think the risks of surgery are grossly under-reported and exponentially more dangerous than we have been led to believe.0 -
Losing it fast is going to have an impact on loose skin, if you go slow then you have a better chance of toning up as you go. You can not have it both ways, pick the lesser of two evils and go with it. The evils are which you want more, fast loss but loose skin or slow loss with toneing. You've got to choose it. I'm choosing fast with loose skin. I've got 44 more lbs to go before I slow it down.0

I've lost 99 pounds in 8 months and still going! My cals are 1200, carbs are under 30g.
For exercise I do cardio 5 days a week and 2 days of strength training.0 -
bumping to read later. I am very interested in the low carb diet, I just eat too much fruit which I shouldn't. Mostly apples and berries. I've lost 88lbs. so far. I'm coming back later to read this again..0

I'm just about to start a low carb diet. I suggest you search the groups for "KETO" and join those groups. Both of them are full of success stories. I fell upon this plan on reddit.com/r/keto . It's worth a look. Full of success stories.0

Ive only just started low carb. Ive been on mfp for what feels like forever lol. I started out with the goal of moving more (the most I moved before was my wrist moving the mouse on a computer) which I have started to achieve, I go to the gym for around 3 hours a week and see a PT once a week. Ive only just started focusing on carbs / protein / fats on recommendation from my PT and only been doing it 2 weeks but Ive went from losing nothing / sometimes fluctuating on the scales to losing a solid 5lbs in 2 weeks. I know it doesnt sound much but its a start and its well on target for what I want to lose!

Yes I have but not all at once. The first time I went on the Atkins Diet, and that is why it did not work for me in the looonnnnng run, LOL No PUN intended...
I found that after losing the weight I would incorporate the carbs back into my diet, (that is a bad word by the way) D I E T...rrrr
I would gain it back. Then going back on the diet, ....rrrr loudly this time as it did not kick in, did not work.
I really have tried every diet out there. All of them. Well, I got the picture one day, and I took all my knowledge and I started doing what I felt would be the best way to go. So here on MFP I did all the right stuff, and came up with how many calories etc I should eat. I dropped weight like crazy, I started walking, then swimming, and so on.
If you want to go low carb, that is a good start, but I would suggest, and this is my case only, maybe keep more carbs than 20 per day. You need the good carbs that are out there. You will feel much better in either case, just be careful if you do continue the low carb as your planning as it will have to be done by the book, which means eventually you will need to incorporate carbs back in sometime in your walk.

There are many ways to lose 100 pounds and most of them are better than surgery. If low carb is the route you want to take, it can surely be done. I would only suggest that you choose a method that you can stick with permanently and I understand that many low-carb eaters do. Only a permanent lifestyle change will bring permanent results. For me, that means the opposite, a diet of about 80% carbs. It's not only gotten the weight off, but it has also gotten me off all my medications and health-related issues. And I love the food now more than ever.

I lost 100 pounds in 6 months eating between 50 and 125 grams of carbohydrates a day. I walked for 1 hour a day -- traipsed really -- while doing mostly strength endurance work (13-20 repetitions) of compound exercises: deadlifts, squats, push-ups, pull-ups, dips, and kettlebell swings.
Once I began eating around 1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight and carbohydrates before my workouts, nearly all of my weight loss was from fat.
I am no longer "low carb," by any definition, because my insulin sensitivity has been restored through weight loss and intense exercise.
Parenthetically, my body fat percentage has, so far, fell by 24%.0 -

OMG! I'm a huge carb eater, too! I didn't know there was anybody else out there that ate such a high ratio of carbs! I agree that people have to find out what works best for them and make sure it's something sustainable. The overall goal is to get that weight off and keep it off, right? :flowerforyou:0 -
I lost my wt. in a year. I lost it too quickly at first and had problems: hair falling out and thinning, nails became brittle and loss of muscle mass. I slowed down my wt. loss and increased my protein intake. I am supposed to eat 75-100 gms. of protein every day and keep my carb. intake low. I was told to lose wt. or I would die. I am healthier now but still have another 50 lbs. to lose. I wish you luck on your wt. loss. Also, make sure that you workout 5 days a week for at least 30 min. a day.0

I've lost 110 lbs and am still losing. I just joined the site to reply to this question. We've done it on the Dukan diet. It is low carb but the diet is based on eating all the lean protein you want. We had done Atkins at one point but never lost like this. I got to certain point and just never got down below that and we did Atkins for more than 2 years so it wasn't like we didn't give a good shot. Of course when we finally went off Atkins I gained most of the weight back. I have also been on every other diet imaginable and before this had managed to take 2 years to lost about 40 lbs by "eating sensible", with this diet in 10 months I've lost 110 lbs. I was so desperate before trying this that I was seriously considering weight loss surgery. On this diet I have lost the weight just about as fast as they projected I would with the surgery. This is real food and exercise. The exercise is simple too just walking 30 minutes a day. We started the diet (our whole family is doing it there are 3 of us) on January 15th, 2012. I had the most to lose starting at well over 300 lbs, like I said I've lost 110 lbs, my husband has lost right at 70 lbs and my son has taken off 50 lbs. The other thing you should know is that I'm 52 so my age makes weight loss much harder but this diet really works even for a middle aged women. I highly recommend it, you can go online and find the official Dukan Diet website you answer a few questions and he sends you and email telling you what your goal weight "true weight" should be. They also offer you their diet coaching but we just read the book and did it on our own. There are lots of people out there that are having success so there is plenty of help without paying for the coaching. :flowerforyou:0
