im wondering how accurate you guys think the bmi charts are? i was looking over one recently and was sort of surprised at the numbers.
my boyfriend stands 5'11 and weighs 205. he is somewhat broad shouldered and has a reasonable amount of muscle on him. no one would EVER accuse him of being "chubby" or "overweight", he doesnt even have a belly. i was pretty shocked to find out his BMI was 28.6....
at my happiest weight i was around 145, which puts me right at the borderline for normal/overweight. i was wearing size M tops and size 8/10 pants.. which i feel like is smaller than average for women in their 30s...
just wondering what the general consensus on this chart is?

I agree with Megan, they are a bunch of bologna!0

BMI does not take into account muscle. It's crap.0

bmi is a third world measurement. He is fat you see. Doctors will call him fat because so many doctors are just as ignorant. He can have a 10%bf with a BMI of 30 and you bet there will be ignoramuses who will just say because of the chart, he needs to lose weight.0

i don't think they are accurate, they are for the average person, not taking into account body frame, bone structure, and yes there is a thing called big boned. At my lowest weight ever 145 in a size 4, i was still 2 points away from my supposed bmi. everyone told me I looked toooo skinny for my structure.0

I think they are completely accurate if you have the body shape and muscle to fat ratios they margin for... HOWEVER as someone who is large chested and naturally more muscular than the average non-weight-lifter, it's idiotic.
Yet... I was still really happy when I dropped out of the obese category...0 -
bmi doesn't work because I'm 5'11 206 I don't use bmi he needs to use body fat cal. where it's your height, weight, and waist line then he'll be happy0

Yeah it's crap, my partner is 6 foot and rather fit, he's in the army and has a lot of mucle and all his docs talk to him about being obese because they follow bmi, he gets rather annoyed at it, I don't bother with it at all!0

I hate the bmi thing. Yes i do want to lose a few pounds but I've been where those charts say i should be and my clavicles and ribs stuck out.....not attractive or healthy IMO.0

Well I know I'm considered borderline obese but at my goal weight set by my doctor i'll be overweight. I see focus on health and let the chip fall where they may.0
