The Atkins Lie - Protein vs. Carbs

So I have read on several health and fitness websites and in several journals and heard from several health and fitness instructors and gurus that your body has to work harder to digest protein so it keeps you full longer than carbs or fat and that if you pile your plate with veggies, it will fill you up. Apparently, my body feels this is a lie because I have been doing the induction phase of Atkins and I eat meat and veggies all day and I stay hungry ALL DAY! Even right after I eat. Today I ate meat and veggies all day and was hungry all day, however, when I got home I figured I'd eat a few chocolate covered raisins and cashews and I'd still meet my 30g carb allotment for the day. I literally ate three chocolate covered raisins and two cashews, LITERALLY and guess what, my hunger has been satisfied. Why? I don't think the protein rule is true for everyone cause it doesn't work for me. Those 3 choco raisins and 2 cashews have kept me full for 45 minutes now!

It is actually FAT that helps you feel satisfied. Cashews are a good source of fat. There is a little fat in chocolate covered raisins, also, but I think it was the cashews that really provided the satisfaction. As an experiment, you can prove this to yourself tomorrow by eating the same way, and then eating some cashews or almonds, and see if that doesn't produce the same result.
  • Yea but I also got the large majority of my fat from chicken and eggs but they didn't fill me up!

Perhaps you can find the answers you seek by researching different opinions on the Aktkins diet. Here is the first one that popped up when I googled "atkins diet problems").
Good luck in your pursuit of health.

So without getting bias and preachy, I'll just say I'm not a big fan of atkins, or southbeach, or medit...oh wait, I actually am a fan of the Mediterranean diet. Anyway any kind of nutrient restrictive diet in general, not a big fan, I don't see the point. They F*** with your body chemistry. Sorry, that's all I'll say about that.

Anyway, it's hard to give any concrete advice because I don't know when you eat, what each meal entails, and how many calories you are burning, I will say this though, from your pictures, you're not far from your goals relatively speaking, so keep that in mind.

I always say, for people who are overweight and have been for a while, listening to your body when it says it's hungry is a RECIPE for disaster, BUT listening to your body when you are at a healthy weight and have been for a while is fine, Why? Generally, people who are at a healthy weight and body fat % don't have unbalanced metabolisms and/or hormone production, and since hormones govern when you feel hungry, it's ok to listen when your body tells you it's hungry. What does this mean? It means while yes, you should eat to fuel your body and not eat to satiate hunger, being hungry is your body (when it's working right) telling you it's out of fuel and it would work better if it had some.
