Leg Cramps while Jogging???

Hi All!

I've recently started to "try" jogging (mostly because I want to be able to run with my dog and increase the burn!!) BUUUUUUTTT after 1-2 minutes the same calf muscle cramps up (nearly caused me to fall off the treadmill last night!) and I have to stop and stick to walking again.
I thought it may be dehydration so I've been increasing my water intake during the day and while I'm exercising but I'm still having the same result which is very frustrating considering I have the stamina to keep going but once it cramps I'm stuck with walking.

Any hints?

Reading your post I first thought of dehydration too, but you say you're drinking enough… Have you tried Gatorade, which adds the necessary electrolytes… Do you warm up?
  • Always warm up for at least 5-10 minutes, I've tried it at the start of my workout and following doing my circuit training with the same result.
I stretch- but maybe not enough? I hold the stretches for about 30 seconds each on each leg and do the hamstrings and calves. I knew this was going to be a slow process but the cramps are really starting to frustrate me!

Try putting the treadmill at a 1 or 1.5 incline. It's closer to "natural".

I have had the same problem and have been told that it could be not enough potassium or calcium in my diet.
