I'm sure this has been asked on MFP a million times, but here's a million & one! What weight do you record in your diary when your weight seems so fluctuate daily??? We have all experienced this..."Alright, I finally lost 2 lbs.!! " the next day, "What, I gained 4 back??? :explode: " I know there are many factors that add to this problem, but do we keep changing our check-in weight??? I finally broke my plateau & lost 1 more lb. I waited and checked it 3 days in a row before I logged it, just to be sure. But what if I didn't wait & logged it 3 days ago, then never saw that weight again?
I don't get it...I think I have confused myself more...lol !:blushing:

I only log it weekly and have picked a certain day (tuesdays) to do so.

I am also trying to only weight once a week (on that day obviously) but so far I am not quite there. In your situation with breaking plateau and all that - I probably would have logged it too just because of excitement. :)

I check- in almost every day on MFP because I like having a record of my weight fluctuations and I like seeing all the changes and fluctuations when I run the progress weight report here. My ticker jumps around sometimes because of it but I don't care.

I have the same issue, I weigh myself every day, can't help it! Mostly it goes up and down from day to day, with only a few days here and there that its the same. I have wondered if it stays the same for two or three days in a row, (say one pound higher:frown: ), does this mean I have gained a pound???? This is where I get confused.
  • weigh yourself once a week or bi weekly. If you doit every day your clothing changes water intake too many variables.

Unfortunately, I'm obsessive with weighing myself...I know it's not good. I will honestly do my best to weigh myself one a week, only because you are such an inspiration! I will have to have my boyfriend hide the scale until I weigh in again...lol! One week today..I can do it!

I don't think I would be able to, I am so obsessed with it! I feel kinda off if I do not weigh myself in the morning! I also think it helps me to be aware of what I am eating throughout the day also....

Good Luck, this site should have a ticker, how many days I can go without weighing myself!!!
  • At this point, i weigh myself daily (exact same time - first thing in the morning; exact same clothes). I think once the scale starts going in the right direction all the time, i'll weigh in every Friday morning like I had originally planned.

Sorry to highjack. Last night i had my first scare too. very depressing. I started and in the first week was down 6lbs (Saturday). Man, i got so pumped on the 6lbs lost i had actually increased my distance and pace during cardio and added 1 set for each workout area thinking maybe another 2-3 maybe for Saturday. I weighed last night and had gained back 5!!!!

Since i havent had a cardio day off (i do cardio daily and weights 4x/week), only walked last night b/c i may need rest. Eating, water, etc.. been doing very good. I am usually within +/-100 or so. Alos, not sure its muscle since i dont lift really hard and that often yet.

You weighed at night. After you had eaten all of your food for the day and drank all your water for the day. I drink close to a gallon of water a day. Sure, a lot of it does come back out, but do you know how much a gallon of water weighs? Over EIGHT POUNDS. All the food you've eaten is in your system and probably still in somewhat hydrated form. I almost always weigh 3-4 pounds more at night than I do the following morning any given day. If I, *ahem*, eliminate the solid food waste from my system between then I can possibly lose 6-7 pounds in around 7 hours overnight.
If I had a lot of sodium the day before, the next day I can easily weigh 2-3 (some people gain 3-4x that) pounds more because extra sodium makes me (and most everyone else) retain water. Drink lots of water and it will be gone in a few days.
And, suffice it to say it's *not* "new" muscle weight. Although your muscles probably *are* retaining water from increased exercise intensity. They like to do that. They'll adjust and drop the water eventually.
Anyway, what I'm saying here is it's perfectly normal for weight to fluctuate up to 5 pounds (or even more) from day to day because of all those reasons listed above (and then some).

Log it once a week. Same time, same scale, same circumstances.
Logging it daily makes no sense. It can be frustrating and discouraging.

Everyone has there opinion on this so how about this................. carry on weighing everyday but update it on here once a week! MMM I think that should keep everyone happy! lol
  • I only weigh in once a week preferrably on monday, I exercise 4-5 times a week. You have to be careful when you start lifting weights before you have worked a sufficient amount of weight off because then you gain muscle and you will weigh in heavier. We all lose weight in diffrent ways. Even though sometimes the scale may say the same thing, I notice that my pants will fit loser. So sometimes we start out losing inches and not weight. Patience is a virtue.... I have learned everything comes in time. Make sure you weigh in with the same clothing or what I do is weigh in, in my birthday suit....
  • I weigh everyday on the Wii but only log it once a week. One day I'll be down 1lb next, up 1.5lb then down 2lb then down 0.5lb then up 0.5lb... But every Sunday I record my weight and so far there is always weight lost.

If you decide to weigh in daily which is crazy, just expect to see a different weight each day!
Pick 1 day to log your weight, that way you can get on the scale daily but, only have 1 weigh in that counts!!!
I know you must be going mad with all the ups & downs!!! WHY do that to yourself?
    Good Luck!!!

My weight's been CREEPING UP the past few days. But I KNOW there's no way I'm gaining fat based on what I'm eating and how much I'm working out. My TOM is due in a few days so I'm attributing it to that.

Weighing myself everyday helps me spot and understand these natural patterns so that, when I DO see an increase, I don't get discouraged.

That said, I only actually RECORD my weight every Tuesday morning, right after I wake up and use the toilet, before I shower. That's when I determine what my ACTUAL weight loss was for the week. Sometimes the number on the scale on the Tuesday morning is inaccurate (due to water retention caused by that time of the month, or something else) but if that's the case I usually see a BIG drop on my next weigh-in.
